Ok.
So over the winter I had the tank coated by a local radiator shop. I cleaned the carbs, new airfilter, blah blah blah.
When I got it running it would start running on 3 or 2 when hot. Replaced a coil, now it's all happy. So now, it runs perfectly, will go on forever, but when I stop it has a hell of a time of starting again. It needs like 10 seconds on the starter with half throttle. Here is the weirdest part. Now the gas tank get's all pressurized, and the breather hose that comes out of the top front right of the tank and goes into the steering stem seems to be leaking gas. When I stop after a long ride and turn it off (doesn't happen when on) I'll get a splash of gas out the front wheel well onto the ground.
I also have badly adjusted valves which are getting fixed today, but I don't think this is the issue in question.
It sounds like in the coating process your vent got cloged and the pressure of the gas tank is forcing gas out the hose you described. Do you know if they took your cap off when they did the coating, cause in most non FI bikes, not sure if yours is or not, that is where the pressure vent is and if that is cloged up that would cause the pressure problem you describe.
+1 to clogged vent. I'm 99.9% sure that the GS and the GSXR share a common gas cap, which means that your gas cap has a vent too. Just clean it out with a straightened paperclip, let us know if it works.
Do you guys think that was causing my starting problem?
Well if you run it for a bit and it creates a vacume in the tank it could. Try opening the gas cap before you start the bike and if it starts right up then that is your problem.
Vacuum in tank will kill it when running too ... especially at high rpm.
Restarts may be jetting ... too rich down low maybe. Valves may be it too.
Air filter as well. That gets dirty and it goes rich.
Then of course check why gas is rising into the vent cap. May be related or not ...
Carb synch also may be a thought. BTW ... tank 1/2 full is better or worse than full ???
Cool.
Srinath.
try this....
when it won't start
take off your lid and earplugs
and slowly open the gas cap
do you hear a rush of air.....
found your prob if you do
It suck the tank on my old SV til the drain tube cracked and let water in around the cap
