Title: First rides on GS500F some questions
Post by: VaRider07 on June 18, 2007, 12:01:35 PM
Purchased an '07GS500F....man now I know that riding a streetbike is indeed an "addiction."  The bike handles so well and is very easy to manuever.  One thing that took me by suprise was how easy it was to walk the bike forward and backward.  Its over 100lbs heavier than my XR400, which I struggled to walk with, but this bike is light as a feather underneath me.  I have 2 questions though:  Is 3500-4000 rpm generally a good range to cruise in?  I know the break-in for first 500 miles states that you shouldnt go over 5500 rpm.  Also I was wondering is it normal for the engine to be really hot to the touch after about a 15min ride?

Congrats on your purchase and welcome!  I would say that 4k RPM is the minimum since the engine doesn't have much torque below that.  Also, it's pretty normal for the engine to be pretty hot after 15 minutes of riding.  Where are you at and what are the ambient temps?

If you're breaking in a brand new ride, its all about VARIATION. It takes WOT then RELEASE to seat things proper. Keeping it under 8K is a good idea also. Changing the oil and filter after 3-400 miles is a really good idea. Do it yourself and save a bundle.

WOT = wide open throttle (not wide open RPM's)
RELEASE = no throttle, allowing the engine to slow you

it's all about preasures in the cylinders. loading and unloading the rings is what you want to do, without making a mess of things by revving it like a madman.

great choice of a bike !

welcome to the forum also.  :thumb:
