I am installing a 2005 gs motor into my 2001 gs. i am noticing some differences in the wiring. Not much mind you, but for instance the hole in the head for the tachometer of my 2001 is not present in the 2005. and there are five wires coming from the transmission casing in the 2005 where as my 2001 only had three. the wires that perplex me are the red with green stripe and the green and i believe black stripe. the 2001 just had a single blue wire that connected beside the battery. the 2005 harness had the same blue wire but also had these 2 mystery wires? anyway i installed the motor and now it will crank but it is as if i am not getting any fire or that my timing is off.
any ideas?
You had a mechanical tach, I believe starting in 03/04 they went to an Electric tach, hence no hole and the extra wires i believe
But dont quote me on that, im still learning my self, Im sure someone else will chime in that knows for sure on the wires
the new ones have a different ignition rotor. if you're using your old module it will not work with the new sensor.

I'm gonna agree with darb. Those 2 mires have got to be you tach feed wires :thumb: :thumb:

Shouldnt this have come with the new engine?
I noticed the sensor change. If that is the one right above the front sprocket. I looked at the differences, and the '01 seems to be an analog whereas the '05 is apparently some kind of digital sensor. However these receptacles are affixed into the housing and that is more of a pain in the ass than I want to deal with. Does anyone have any ideas to circumvent this issue?
Doest look as though you can, the two are significatly different. Do you have the new Clymer manual? the newest one covers the 04 and newer bikes, might be helpful
Just wait for dgyver or werase or srinath to chime in.. they're the genii...

What are you trying to say?
Ya, Im sure they will Chime in they are awesome and know thier shaZam! a hell of a lot better than me.
Good luck either way
well i may just pull the harness and coils as well.
i appreciate the help

Replacing that sensor plate and rotor is no big deal... the rotor just unbolts, and the sensor plate just has a few screws. The electronics in your frame are expecting the sensor plate and rotor in your old engine.
This situation has come up several times recently.
I only have wire diagrams up to '04, so I do not know about the extra wires from the left side. 3 yellow are the stator on the newer motors, earlier models have 3 white w/ different tracer colors but they are all the same. You mentioned something about wires above the sprocket? That is the neutral position sensor. On the 89-02, there is only 1 wire for neutral. A guess that any extra wires would be for gear position indication for some of the new emission crap. How many wires are on the 05 motor on the gear position sensor? Got any pics?
Maybe already answered....As for the signal generator and rotor, either use the one from the 01 or switch over the rest of the electrics from an '05 (04+ should work). The harness and the ignition module (they mount differently) need to be used with the same year/generation of the signal generatio & rotor. Either way, there probably will be different connectors.
The '04 head still had the hole for the tach drive gear, it has a removable plug filling the void. Maybe the casting was updated to eliminate the plug. Not sure if the EX cam still has the worm gear to operate the drive. I have several drives if needed.
okay i switched the stat to the one from the 01 motor .... but the motor will turn but i am still not getting any fire. i am getting power to the coils but the left side wont spark and frankly the motor is giving me hell. All of my connectors are connected and the kickstand sensor is closed.
