Title: Front Brake CAD Drawing
Post by: Anakist on June 23, 2007, 01:08:06 AM
Does anyone have a CAD drawing of the GS500 front rotor? What about dimensions? I am going to geta wave disc made locally and want a CAD drawing to get it milled.

sorry, no .cad of the rotor. isn't producing it locally pretty expensive compared to fleabay or craigslist ?

ok, you're already decided. might wanna get the shop to waterjet 10-20 and sell the extras to offset your cost.... ohhhhh THAT's what you were planning already !   :thumb:

Never seen them anywhere for cheap. Chaparral has the EBC contour discs for $208.99, which is about $250 australian, and that is not including postage, and it isn't as cool. I can get bisalloy 360 for cheap so I would just need the milling done. Will work out to be much cheaper.

Just out of curiosity how is it going to be made, have you spoken to any m/c shops yet?

Yeah,  Me thinks that there would be integrity/wear issues if you craft this out of one piece.  The bolt/washers that hold the contact ring to the inner piece allow a small amount of flex/float that keeps the rotor from warping badly and/or breaking due to the thickness or lack there of and the load placed on the rotor :dunno_white: :dunno_white: :thumb:

I am going to get the outer contact ring machined to fit on the stock inner piece so it is a floating disc.

I am not sure exactly how yet. Hopefully someone close will have a CNC mill or profiler that I can get it cut on. I even think getting it water or plasma cut, then cleaning it up on a lathe so it is smooth and square will work. But I will talk to the machining people.

Tafran: That looks good. Thanks.

IIRC, some of the aftermarket ones are solid, especially the rears are solid discs. But I want fully floating for wank facter :D

Getting the outer contact section cut to your spec wont be a problem if you can find someone who can laser or waterjet it. 360 plate is an ideal steel for a brake disc, its a moderate to hard grade with a good abrasion tolerance but I think the section may be too thin for profile burning without distortion and rough edges and it may be too thick for an average plasma cutting set-up. Bear in mind these are specialised services and that machine set-up and use time is never cheap. Attatching it to the inner disc so that it floats and remains secure under heavy braking is where all the real problems will be. I doubt its possible to pull this off for less than the off the shelf cost of a new one but I will be very interested to know how you get round the problems and how it all turns out.

I would just measure it.

You will want a floating rotor, either semi or full. Replacement buttons are available, EBC probably has them. I have a rotor that has some cool purple buttons.

It is not going to be cheap, especially in low quantities....setup will kill you.

this sounds like a recipe for disaster, also it may void your insurance
