Hello there, I have a 2004 gs500, and last summer the engine let go after 22,000 KMs, I recently bought another gs500 engine with 16,000 (from an older model), and had a friend install it for me. We can't seem to get the bike started and was wondering if there was something obvious I might be missing here, or if anyone knows why the engine wont start, maybe because of some electrical differences in the later models? I've tried 2 different batteries and can't seem to get any spark at all from the plugs, the engine turns freely and has good compression. All the other electrical components seem to be working correclty lights, signals etc with the exception of the horn.
Clutch Interlock?
89-02/03 electricals are different than 04+. The signal generator and rotors are different. Look under the small round cover on the right side.
There have been 3-4 threads covering this in the past month.
Please excuse my double post about this issue, after a few hours of searching, and dqyver's post i have gathered that the electrical systems are different on years previous to that of the '04, however I am unable find any posts about any type of solution for this problem. Should i just take it to a mechanic and let him try and fix it or is there a fairly easy solution to this, I also have the old engine and all of its components. thanks again
No problem. I only mentioned the other threads since I did not feel like searching for them, too tired.
I would try to use as much of the electricals from the 04 motor... which may be as little as swapping the signal generator & rotor.
Basically what I have installed at the moment is a signal generator that has 2 nodes, and a rotor that has only 1 lug on it (which I believe are both from the pre '04 engine). Am I doing this in reverse (should I have the signal generator that only has one node on it and a rotor that has several lugs on it) or is the setup that is currently in there correct? Also i only have the one rotor for some reason, not sure where the one from the '04 with more lugs on it went to. This is confusing me to the extreme :dunno_white: thanks for all the info dgyver, its really helping out seems like you know your GS!! :thumb:
Looks like you have them mixed.
The 04+ uses the mutli-lug rotor (1 large lug with several smaller lugs) with the 1 pick-up generator plate.
The 89-02/03 uses the 2-lug rotor with the 2-pickup generator.
With that said....Use the 04+ setup on your replacement motor since you will be using the rest of the 04+ electricals, mainly the ignition module which changed in 04 as well. If you cannot locate the 04 rotor, I am not sure how the 04 ignition module will react with the 89-02 setup using the 2-lug rotor...probably will not work since the signals & timing will be different.
I hope that makes sense.
Hey to all those who are interested, I ordered the rotor for a 2004, and am using the 2004 pick-up generator and the bike works fine now, even the tach and speedometer is working! Anyways i just thought i would give an update on the situation as well as thank dgyver for all his help and knowledge thanks a lot! So pumped to get it back on the road again after almost 2 years!!
Glad hear it all worked out. :thumb:
