Title: Where do you park your bike?
Post by: AirStreamGS500E on June 24, 2007, 02:42:21 PM
I am in the process of converting my shed into a lil garage for my GS. All i got left to do really is build a ramp and put up some time of bumpers on the door frame cause its only a couple inches wider than the bike.

A few people have told me to just leave it parked outside and it will be fine...others tell me to park it inside or at least under a carport.

I just thought it would be an interesting discussion on where everyone parks their bikes. Pros vs. Cons

obvious pros of parking inside is its out of the weather elements and safe from debris...plus less likely to be stolen.

locked garage.... with rotor lock.

In public... as close to the building as possible, with rotor lock.

at work... wherever the hell look convienent... I work on a secure installation... I leave my key in the bike 1/2 the time by mistake.

I have 10 foot by 15 foot building,8 foot by 8 foot,5 foot by 7 foot building, all of them are enclosed and lock. The 10 by 15 has dirt floors that are hard as concrete and never get wet.The rest have wood floors with ramps. My bike had been kept outside some before I got it,and now my controls on the handle bars need replacing.

I park mine on the roof. I have a little ramp and I just jump it up there. When I leave I just drop right off the top.

Usually under the front porch or under the carport. Keep a good coat of wax on it and try to keep it out of the wind and moisture, do that and it should hold up well. Or you could always get a bike cover.

The GS rusts bad enough.....leaving it outside will only make it worse. A cover will slow the oxidation.

My 4 or so bikes rest comfortably in my climate controlled shop.  O0

Let's see... some outside under a good cover, always in a garage for the winter, and at my current house, in the shed.  I can't wait to have my own garage someday

Mine's locked in my garage. I'll likely be able to fit both my cage and my bike in the garage if I ever finish unpacking my moving boxes.... But the moto will always have priority.  :kiss3:

i park mine on the sidewalk in front of my house...or if I'm feelinig up to the task I park it in the house.  I used to park in the house all the time but someone stole my ramp.  I had my TL parked in the house at the time and nearly never got the Buddha Loves You out.

3 cars with keys in the drive, 3 bikes (including a friend's 916 SB) parked in the yard and on the walk all with keys, thousands of dollars of tools laying about...and someone steals my f%$king ramp.

Tip for parking in parking spots such as along road sides or car parks.

Park further out in the spot so your bike is easily seen by passing cars which are looking for a spot to 'dart' into.

I had my bike knocked over once because a car shot into the spot thinking it was empty, realised too late and couldn't stop in time.  :icon_confused:

Agreed.  Based on the way these things rust, mine sits in my garage.  And I avoid driving in the rain like the plague.

I park three in my garage, and my two cars and truck have to sit out. I don't have a proble with it but my GF also has a van and car so she always wants them inside, but it's not going to happen. We are looking at houses now, got to find one with a barn or 3-4 car garage.

In my 2.5 car garage with attached carport.  It lives there with our Town & Country, my Camaro, and all my tools.  My bike trailer lives in the carport.  Everything stays comfy and dry.  However, today my bike lives on the trailer in my garage 'cause it's ready to go to the Gap tomorrow.    :thumb:

In my garage, together with father's car.
Leaving my poor car outside exposed to the elements (no place for a 2nd one...) my poor Punto...

mine sits out in the rain uncovered exposed to the elements.  that is until i get around to building my shed which will be after i finish putting up my pool and the deck to go around it.  may be i'll get the shed done this year.  if not i'll park it in my grandparents garage or shed for the winter.

I have my whole band's worth of equipment in my 2-car garage , my sheet metal brake & lockformer for work , a bunch of boxes (we have a split-level , so our basement is the family room) so I just currently have 2 of the cheapy covers from Walmart (they'll soak through after a couple days) . I feel horrible doing it , but if it starts raining before I get a cover on it I just leave it uncovered ... even though the covers have little pockets that supposedly are vents , the condensation buildup inside the cover will fill my muffler with water and the bike will stay wet for at least a full day afterwards  :icon_rolleyes:
Gonna get a shed soon for the boxes and X-mas stuff , and they should have our space for my new sheet metal shop/office ready soon ( i'm expanding FINALY after almost 4 years of my E350 being my "office" ... yay! AND i get to trade work for rent 'cause the dude owns a bunch of aprtment complexes with old furnaces and A/Cs  :thumb: ) , so i'll finally be able to clean my baby and KEEP it clean for more than just a couple days at a time  :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen:

In the garage, with the car butted up within inches of the bike and the bike within inches of the brick wall.  They'd have to break into the garage, then break into the car to get at the bike.

I think I have my priorities in the right order.

I did the rain for a month... had to clean it like every 3 days... didn't do much, still cleaned up nice, and didn't have any issues...

then I changed to a carport, and then dust was the enemy... I had to wipe it down almost everyday...

then I switched to a garage, and what a difference, it stayed cleaner waaaay longer :)

Mine sits at work in a private covered parking area (motrcycle area), at home it has 10x20 space under the car port (being closed on backwall) so dust is the reall enemy, but I live in the country so... dust is just a way of life... I clean it once a week maybe... or get dealer to do it for me when I bring it in for an oil change. (they do it for free).

rust...? the only rust I see on my ride is on the handlebars.... I will probably pull it off one of theses days sand them down, use engine paint (high temp) and use my oven at 450'f for 2 hrs to cook it on. (works well on spring shocks on my cars for years)... and be done with that issue.

cheers
