2001 Monster 750 with 15,000 miles. Aftermarket high mount exhaust, fender chop with integrated turn signals and clip ons included.
Not sure about the clipons yet. He had them mounted above the triple tree with the forks slid up maybe 1" to get them clamped on. I'm not sure what adjusting the forks like that does for handling. It's a bit of a reach to the bars but not bad.
Fun to ride :) Low speed throttle response sucks, I'm thinking that's probably due to factory lean jetting combined with aftermarket exhaust. Plus it wasn't too warmed up when I test rode it, have to see how it does fully warmed up. Lock to lock on the bars is pretty weak too, I'm going to have to practice counterbalancing to do slow speed turns. Looks like there are some stoppers I can adjust to get a bit more room. Compared to the GS it feels more stable in the turns, but the GS wins on lean in. I don't think many bikes out there lean in as easily as the GS...
I wanna ride.PLEASE,PLEASE.Can I ride? :kiss3:
When did the monster go to FI....it was somewhere around 01 :dunno_white: :dunno_white: the 750 doesn't put out an insane amount of power,.....don't remember exactly but it's a good deal under 100hp.....it's not gonna go like a gix750 or even a gix6 for that matter
It makes the gix's look retarded though....that's a gorgeous bike :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen:

I bet U get an eye rection looking at it.
I won't lie. I would marry a fat chick for that bike :o
Fuel injection came out in 02, only added a whopping 2 HP though. I like carbs, I can work on them :) It's a 2V air cooled carb'd engine, basically a sexier GS with nicer suspension. Of course it has those wacky valve's...
Power wise it puts out a whopping 62 HP at the crank. So a bit more than the GS, around the same as the ninja 500. I was initially looking at 620's because I thought a 750 would be too much for me since I've been riding a whopping 2 months now, but powerwise it's about spot on with the 620. Pretty darn weak for a 750 but it's right about the amount of power I need now so it works for me. And only around 20 lbs heavier than a GS too. And it's got a low fuel light!
I'm in love with the clutch and shifter, so nice. With the exhaust I think I'm gonna have to rejet. Might help the slow speed stutters.
Best of all, only $3500. I felt bad. NADA had it at $4200 and KBB had it at $4950. Plus it has the exhaust system, clipons, tail mod and 14t sprocket. Brand new dunlop sport tires too. $3500 was a steal. I was looking at used GS' in the $2500 range and this was an easy choice :)
And yeah it's a sex machine. I got accosted by a car full of girls trucking it home. Pulled up next to a stoplight and were blowing kisses and saying how they loved my bike. I'm 30 years old and married, that hasn't happened to me in a while :)
  Dry clutch is awesome :thumb: :thumb: Duc's are mega babe magnets....have fun and dont let the wife know
Oh Man... damn I'm jealous. Dammit!!! I have to wait for mine... I got a visit from the taxman this year, and he wasn't real friendly. That one looks sharp... $3500? That's a good deal!
You're right on the power, the 620 with Termis I rode had similar juice to the couple of 750's I've tried, actually I'd say a bit more... but they were really close. The 695 (stock) was in the same ball park power wise as well. All had PLENTY of power for my needs. Beautiful bike..
Congrats man! I am so damn jealous... enjoy it!
Oh yeah, did I mention I was jealous??

I don't think this one has a dry clutch. Haven't really looked into it though, seems like the monster is kind of a parts bin raid and every year a bunch of things seem to change. Depending on what year you get you might have a dry clutch, wet clutch or slipper clutch. You may have a tach or not. You may have dual front rotors or single. It's kind of like a lottery. I was happy to find an 01 since that's the first year the 750 got a tach and dual front brakes.
ehhh it's still a Duc with aftermarket exhaust....can't beat that sound :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:
congrats man, the bike is awesome. Where did you find it, Craigslist, cycletrader?
I normally think red is too cliche, but that is just sexy

I got lucky actually, I was giving up and about to spend $2500 on a used GS (about all I could find ready to ride). I had lost a few monsters on eBay since they were selling way too high. Almost bought a ZR-7S but luckily someone beat me to it. Found a guy up in cleveland selling a 1999 monster 750 for $3500 on craigslist, but then found out it was actually in the shop having it's 6,000 mile service done and wouldn't be out for a week, after which the owner would be on vacation for another week. Pissed me off, why advertise a bike that isn't ready to sell?
Then someone responded to my post on the ducati monster site about me looking for one, price was right, bike looked go and there we go. He had actually bought it as a track/project bike and didn't ride it much, said he wasn't really looking to sell it but didn't really use it enough to need to keep it. He knew the original owners who owned a local bike shop, so one can assume it was pretty well taken care of. Mileage is kinda high but runs great. Already had stainless lines on it, brake fluid looked clean, which leads me to believe it was well maintained (I think the average bike owner doesn't worry about things like changing brake fluid...).
I'm glad the other options failed, compared to the 99 monster this one adds dual front brakes and a tach for the same price. And the 99 had the tank repainted after a spill and was black with red racing stripes, not sure about that one :)

I think you did great, that bike seems a gem. Those 2V air cooled engines seem to be very durable if well maintained, which that one clearly was. Do a search on the Ducatimonster.org site, there are some dudes with some SERIOUS mileage on their monsters, so 15k for a well maintained one is not to high at all. Congrats debtman.
Oh yeah, did I mention that I'm jealous?? As hell???

Yeah I heard :) Come to ohio and take her for a spin. I got the stock bars back on, I'll probably get ridiculed but I'm old enough to care about comfort. I gotta admit, the clipons gave awesome feel in the corners, however after 15 minutes I was ready to get off the bike. With the stock bars on the riding position is about the same as the GS, plus the bike seems to turn in much quicker now. Doesn't look as mean though... I must be getting old.
And the gearing is still making me crazy. It's already down one tooth on the front and I'm contemplating going up another 3 on the back. Riding this thing smoothly through a parking lot or gas station is work, and 5th gear isn't even usable until you're doing at least 70. I'm guessing it's geared so tall to pass emissions and sound level requirements. The bike loves to go fast though, buttery smooth at speed. Just have to slip the clutch through the parking lots :)
Ha, if CT and OH were closer, I'd be knocking on your door right now, LOL. I agree on the clip ons, I don't like them on a Monster all that much. I think the stock bars are aggressive enough without being uncomfortable, and I don't prefer the look of either over the other... so comfort wins out there for me... I actually really like the look of the stock bars with some cool bar end mirrors.
I'm surprised the gearing is giving you such a problem with the 14t on there, I know they are generally geared pretty tall, but usually people claim the 14t solves that. Maybe you just need to get used to it? They definitely have a much different feel than the GS, especially the clutches wet, dry or slipper. The 750's I drove were a 99 and 00, and I think they were both carbed... both had aftermarket exhaust and jetting and a 14t and felt pretty good, is your FI?

Yep carb'd. DOn't get me wrong, it's not horrible, just...different? Throttle is touchy at low speed in first gear, but that's a given, GS is the same way, but a little harder to be smooth on the monster. The odd thing though is that once you manage to get a steady throttle at say 10 mph in a parking lot, the bike is still subtely jerky. You can feel it every so slightly surging rythmically. Then trying to get back on the throttle it can be very abrupt. Just need some time to smooth it out, but even shorter gears would probably help. I mean, the GS isn't too bad since you hit the smooth 3,000 RPM range pretty slow, under 15 mph I think. The monster really has to get up to 20-25 before the engine response smooths out, since that gear is so tall.
I still need to check the plugs, I'm wondering if with the exhaust it's a bit lean and that's contributing to this. But it starts up fine, choke off in 30 seconds or less and runs fine over 3k RPMs.
It's apparently just meant to go fast :)
I hear ya... that's why I'm always shocked to see people say that you will "outgrow" the 620, 695, 750 and 800. I just have to laugh re: people saying they've "outgrown" a bike... that really is a horseshit statement in my opinion... the GS500 is plenty fast enough to get into trouble, and all of those bikes are significantly faster than my bike. Wanting more speed/torque is completely different than outgrowing a bike... That hopped up 620 I test rode? That thing just WANTED to go fast. It REALLY coaxed you to go fast and over the speed limit. I could never see a need to have a more powerful bike, unless I was on a racetrack. I mean, how fast do you really want to be able to go on a bike on the street? I left a Mustang GT in the dust on that 620, and the guy was trying to keep up with me. Up until 60mph I left him FAR behind. And on the highway, the thing had PLENTY enough juice to pass people EASILY at highway speeds/pace.
Hey, you know what re: the gearing? When I learned to ride I was taught to always feather the clutch and go in and out of the friction zone when doing low speed maneuvers... I do this on every bike I ride and always have, I wonder if that's why I don't notice the different gearing as much?
I feather the clutch with low speed manuevers, no problem, it's more of the riding through a parking lot or riding by playing kids in the neighborhood that is tough. Situations where you are puttering along at 10-15 mph, not turning or manuevering, just puttering along.
And yeah, I don't know what it is about the bike, but it does beg to go fast. I can't explain it, but it just wants to move. Maybe it's the exhaust note :) It's also smoother than the GS so I don't notice how fast I'm going until I look down...

Ah, I got you. Funny, each of the few Monsters I've test driven, I was always able to pull right out of a lot onto a road and get right up to speed with no traffic around. I'll have to specifically try and find some low speed areas next ride, LOL. And I definitely am with you on the speed thing with the Monsters. It was actually one thing that really concerned me about moving to one after the GS, I really don't need any speeding tickets, and it's just not safe to fly from stoplight to stoplight LOL. I found the same thing with the SV650 and EX650(though less so on the EX650). Honda 599 as well.
BTW, did I mention I'm jealous? :)
Settle down, Johnny5. You might want to sit out a few plays, captain.

The bike definately gets a lot of attention, even at the BMV the chicks were like 'OOOH ducati'. It always make me want to say, yeah uh, it cost about the same as a brand new ninja 250 so don't get too worked up there... Of course as far as the BMV knows it only cost $1500...
