I have a bent fork and have ordered the new tube. I see where some people have made a homemade damper tool but on the 06 forks it wont work. I was wondering if anyone has found a new way for the newer forks or if anyone knows where I can just buy the tool. The dealers around here are retards and id rather do it myself anyways. Thanks in advance.
Old post, i know, but it came up in the search so ill answer for future searches.
Just got mine out, had a similar issue, I assume you were trying to fit something into a hex socket in the fork? Well there isnt one, (not in my bike),
The fork removal tool thread shows the damper rod with the socket, but if you pretend that isnt there, whats left is what i found in my forks. So how do you get it out? Theres nothing to grab onto, just a 15mm hole with filleted edges. Get a broom handle, cut a long taper and bash the sucker into the hole, then you can unscrew that damn bolt.
1 weeks worth of stuffing around to figure this out.
Fork tool, fork seal, damper rod bolt.
does anybody know if there is a proper tool for removing the newer damper rod on the newer forks?
or is the broom stick the best tool atm?
Theres a picture of the factory tool in the factory manual which you can find here

its on page 20 of section 20 to be honest it looks like a cone anywhay so a brrostick may be the answer!!

If you do buy the tool can you post a picture as the photo in the manual is not that clear
Cheers
hmm that clarifies things..a little lol. it really is just a cone.

it would be nice to able to attach something similar to a 3/8 or 1/2 drive socket wrench.
Seems like a pretty stupid change.
I'd like to compare an old model's damper rods wtih a new one's, as there apprears to be little difference.
Very similar part nos.:

seems like they just made the design that much worse with the new rod. that picture isn't that really but you can see there are no ridges for the damper rod tool to grab onto.
can anybody take a picture of the newer rod?
does anybody have that tool?
i'm very interested in this matter because i am thinking of "upgrading" to a newer version of the gs eventually. i just want to cover these issues before hand.
Finally finished this job.
Now that i got them apart and back together again, removing the damper rod bolt is not a big deal, compress springs, remove bolt. It seems that my bike came with, (or someone added) a LOT of loctite on the bolt, so it really didnt want to come out. It seriously took a broom handle being bashed into the about 15mm hole with a lot of bashing before the thing would hold.
I dont envy anyone that has the same problem as i did.
