Here is the long story short. http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=33614.120 (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=33614.120)
I was set to go to Deals Gap but needed new tires, I ordered them and payed extra for 3 days shipping. Now the company says they won't get here until next week, I need them now. So, would you ride on these tires over 500 miles?
Front- Note the dry rot

Rear- Note the semi bald center.

I want to take it to the Gap soooo bad!

I'm 95% sure I won't risk it especially under the extreme riding condition I would subject them to. The only other option is to maybe take my Dad's bike? The M/C gods are against me.

CB750

rode my TL on worse but I won't condone it. Personal call there. I certainly wouldn't want to run the Gap if I wasn't sure of my tires. I would love to tear a CB750 through the Gap.
That is the model i Hate , . Take the Crap Fairings off and put a single or double lamp on it , it looks so rough like that!
i don't see any problem there.. as long as it doesn't rain.. :thumb:
have you seen racing tires for car/bikes?
haha there's a little difference between a worn down street tire and a race slick...
lol , Just A Little . Hmm haha , im laughin to
I would ride 500 interstate miles. I would NOT hit the gap. I have 12.5K on my stock rear.. it's about 10x as bald as yours is... but I won't push it.. nothing but straight and flat for me, until my new roadriders get here later this week.
dial up...pics didn't load fast and I assumed you were talking about a gs for some reason. that would be a definite no on taking the B12 to the Gap.
Yeah, I'm leaning more to the side of caution. Its a bandit 600 not 1200, I wish. The chance of rain Friday is 60% and 50% Saturday which are my two main riding days. Of course Sunday is 10% and I have to spend all day riding back home(10 hrs). Life isn't fair.

I'd take the CB...but I'd probably take the CB anyway...
You will have less fun with flat tires.
The safety call is up to you, but remember: Nice, new, scrubbed in tires are the best ride around..... Flat, square tires are more work, less safe, and less fun.
I think the back would be ok as your not going to hit the center much on the dragon but that front is scarry.
When I got my Gs I could resist riding it. The rear tire was worse than yours and I still put 1000mi on it. the tire was starting to show signs of comming apart though so I burnt it off and got a new one. With that tire I'd say your good for 500mi.
If you have to ask, you know you shouldn't. :thumb:
I'd be all over that cb like stank on - well you know.
How's the Bandit compare to the CB anyway ? Smoothness, pickup, heft, tossable, etc ?
Your dad has a cool bike, I mean you do to, but the CB's are some of my favorites.
having been on both I'd take the CB hands down...smoother, faster, lighter steering. the Bandit is much more a beginner's bike...the CB is more the kind of bike you step up to after spending a few months on the beginner's bike.
The nighthawk is easily slower then the bandit 600, I'd say the nighthawk is smoother, and the bandit will out handle the nighthawk any day of the week. It is top heavy and slower to respond then the bandit. I swear the bandit feels easier to lean then my GS. The nighthawk is more of a commuter to me, it can lean if asked but it doesnt give very good feed back and you have to kinda man handle it. The bandit responds to my every whim, surprisingly comfort is close, but the nighthawk wins with a more upright seating position. The hydraulic valves on the bandit keep it from being really revy and limit its top end but had good low down grunt. The bandit def. has that nice sporty feel w/ good acceleration from 2k.

it feels slower to you because of the extra 3" of wheelbase. Outside of that, trust me...the CB has more power aand she weighs the same. In the propper hands she'll walk all over the B6. Load the front 35~40 mm and she'll really get crazy.
I doubt it would have that much of an advantage. I did some research and here is what I found. Turns out they are just about evenly matched for low end power but the bandit has better top end accel.
hard to find specs but here:
http://www.mcnews.com/mcnews/articles/Test_Bike_Index2003-2.pdf
8/96
top speed: 124
0-60 : 4.05
0-1/4 mile speed : 106.23 mph @ 12.3 sec
hp : 72.4 hp @ 10400 rpm
492 lbs. wet
http://www.pipeline.com/~randyo/Super_Standards.htm
5/1993 issue, Cycle World
top speed: 114
0-60 : 4.1 sec
0-1/4 mile speed: 105.14 mph @12.69 sec
62.4 @ 8250 rpm
498 wet
124/114 is absolutely ridiculous for either of them...and the last Nighthawk I saw put on the dyno pulled 68.8hp and 44 ft/lbs. Something must be wrong with cycleworld...
i've already hit an indicated 120 mph on the bandit and had more to go but backed off, so 124 is pretty realistic. assuming i pushed it more past 120 w/ the speed correction, since the m/c speedo would be slower indicated I'd say its very realistic. I'm sure the nighthawk isnt far off.

Are you thinking 124 is h.p???

both tooooooooooooo slow. I've had both closer to 130 without any problems. I know the Bandit is geared to exceed 120 by a ways so their bike must have been broken. A stock Nighthawk won't reach very high because she's geared short...change the sprockets and she'll reach way past 120. Both bikes will. Hell my 36hp XS400 would do 118 (radar indicated).
Thats pretty much what I found from several sources over near a decades worth of data. But okay.

Conventional wisdom is that if you set off on a 500 mile trip make sure your tyres are fit for double the distance. the fact that you are concerned indicates they are borderline at best, maybe OK for a straightforeward trip but not for sporty riding or anything being pushed to the limit.
I might ride to the gap on those tires, but I wouldn't ride the gap on those tires.
I'm with Mak on this, I've been on worse at the Gap but if you don't feel safe, buy some from a dealership.
go out and buy some preruns from the track....extra sticky..there still in good condition and have excellent tread on them. thats what everyone does around here.

That's because 90% of riders in Daytona are squids... j/k. Seriously though, get some used track tires, they're great for hard street riding but NOT race tires. Unless you're seriously cooking out there, race compound tires won't get hot enough to stick well.
they do when its 85 to 90 degrees ouside and the road heats up after absorbing all that solar energy

Not even close to normal operating temp for race compound tires, those things cool down if you're not constantly wailing on them. I don't care if it's 100 degrees outside.
Read this write-up from Chicken Hawk Racing, they make Tire Warmers:

QuoteWhat is operating temperature?
Almost all tire compounds (street legal and racing slicks) are working well at temperatures between 145 & 185 degrees Fahrenheit. Just because you are sweating and hot doesn't mean your tires are hot. Some qualifying tires need to be as hot as 210 F

Hey I just brought one, I don't like the fairing too but it is kinda good to have some wind protection.
Cheerz
Id rather get full force of the wind , and look gd , then have bulky fairing that doesnt even flow with the bike
ive never used any sort of fairing ,or anything , and it doesnt bother me at all , i carely even feel it , and how can little bits of crappy fairing stop wind hitting you at 100mph? it cant ,
:dunno_white: im sure its about taste

so you are telling me that if its 95 degrees out and the pavement is absorbing the solar energy unless im flying down the street at 90mph my tires arnt at the operating temp.???
Speed has almost nothing to do with tire temperature, they're not doing any work to speak of unless you're accelerating or decelerating when going straight. to get tires up to normal operating temp, you need to be cornering very hard. So you're correct, going 90mph straight on 95 degree pavement will not get street tires up to their optimal temperature, and they will be downright dangerous on race compounds. Tearing up Deal's Gap at a constant 60 mph in 95 degree weather will absolutely get them up to the 150-210 degree range, but how often will you be doing that? Would you rather have tires that are working at their best (street compound) 95% of the time but can't quite run as hard as race tires, or tires that are risky 95% of the time and kick ass when they're in their element (hot, twisty tracks)? Safe bet is on nice quality street tires like the Pilot Powers or the Metzeler M1/M3.
Thanks for the info everyone! I decided not to risk it and what do you know Friday night my tires showed up, a day late and a dollar short. Its a pair of Metzler Z4's fyi. Anyway, thanks again.
