Title: track bike question
Post by: bluelespaul on June 29, 2007, 01:45:06 PM
i was looking around the net at pics of bikes and track bikes and i noticed that no track bikes have lights, and the ones that do have them covered by tape or something like that. so the question is: why? are you not allowed to have lights on a track or something?

and in this pic, he even has his mirrors taped off. http://www.kolumbus.fi/lari.paananen/track2.JPG

I don't think track marshalls appreciate broken shards of plastic and glass on the track. I think it creates a big safety hazard.

That would be correct.Race bikes, race cars, don't matter.Glass is a safety issue.Any glass should be replaced with acrylic or polycarbonate.Mirrors and lights should be left at home.

On a similar note all the glass and plastic I see taped up is done with blue tape.  Is there a blue "racing tape" or something?  Or is it blue painter's tape?

Painters tape.It won't pull off paint or decals, and usually leaves little to no residue. The bike in the pic you posted is running brown shipping tape.I use the standard tan colored tape or electrical tape on my car at track day.

Mirrors have 2 reasons for being removed or taped. 1 the above mentiond shards of glass, and 2 what's behind you does not matter it is the responsibility of faster traffic to pass you in a safe manner. If you don't disconnect or remove your tail light make sure it is taped up so your brake light does not show through as well. It is very distracting to be hammering into a corner and see someones brake light come on.

If taping the lights....make sure you unplug them. The heat will leave sticky residue from the tape.
