Title: here is the plan for the 2005 GS F
Post by: frankieG on June 30, 2007, 05:39:15 PM
i am getting a wrecked 2005 gs500f with 198 miles on it yes 198 for 1200 bucks.  at first i was going to take the parts of my 89 gs to get the F going but changed my mind.  what i am going to do is take the engine, fuel system(minus the tank) carb airbox, clutch, all the goodies and put it on my 1989.  why do that instead of just putting my 89 forks, clip on and bits and have a 2005f model?  well i don't like the color of the F, blue/white, i don't have a black wheel so i would have to use two white ones which would make the fruity F look even gayer.  then there is the tax, registration and extra insurance.  but with all the goodies taken off the f  onto my 89 i would have none of that problem.  basically i would have a 1989 gs500e with 198 miles on it :)  .   once i get this all done i will be selling the bits and pieces that are left over.  i list would be something like this

05 frame
05 rear tire and wheel
05 wiring harness
05 gas tank with ignition and keys
05 front fairing...rashed but good
05 side plastics...rashed but good
05 left side fairing...rashed but good
05 tac and speedo
05 bars with contols, triple tree
05 stock exhaust

89 motor with 26k miles and rebuilt carb 100 miles, has just had the valves done and clutch inspected all a-ok
89 fuel system,  petcock and lines
89 airbox

so what do you guys think?

plan a have a 1989e with 05 198mile motor, tranny, carb, fuel system etc    or
plan b have a 2005F with the forks and front wheel/brakes of a 89

I need new handle bar controls, will you be sending controls, bars, and upper triple?I may convert mine to standard bars and use the clipons on something else.Keep me in mind when you get a for sale list.I could use other parts.

Why don't you just paint the wheels with engine High temp paint it's really durable, It would make foe a easier swap. Just laeve the fairings off.

Theres been a few posts recently about people having troubles with swoping newer engines for old , different pickups on the engine and stuff,  have a good think , as i can imagine it can get stressful

Also , the breaks got changed in 96 , so i imagine u will have the older break set up on the 89 , so you would be making the breaking worse

There is no 'better' or 'worse' braking for the GS.  One front caliper/rotor = crappy braking no matter what year you have.

i just don't like the f in style or color so i though switching the mechanical parts to the 89 would be the easiest route.   if it is not then i will have to rethink my plan.  basically i will fix the f but put the tank and plastic on as well as the forks, front wheel, my yoshi exaust, clip ons and some minor stuff like carbon lights and clear led integrated tail light.  i will do the white wheel thing by puting on my 89 wheels since i will have the black plastic and tank on it.

thank you all for the advise

If you fix the 05 properly you maybe able to sell it and make some $$$.Just and idea.  :dunno_white:

I think you're going to find that switching a front end and painting some plastics will be much easier than switching out the engine.  Especially if you're going to do it yourself :thumb: :thumb:

i really appreciate the help, you guys are giving me advise that is preventing a possible disaster.   ok new info

cost of bike
1200

cost of parts from suzuki
1653

total

2653

KBB value, did not have 198 miles so i had to go with the lowest at 5k

3600

to be honest i will not be buying those parts just taking it from the 89 sooooooooo

1200 plus 500 labor and ? factor

1700 for a 2005 GS500E no not F, with 198 miles on it.

then i can sell off the parts of my 89 and prolly get 500 or more so that brings the cost down to 1200 again

so basically i will use the plastic, gas tank, frame fairings, clip ons, front and rear wheels and tires, forks and yosh system for my 89 on the 05.

comments?

oh, i won't register the 05 cuz it will be the split image of the 89, i will just change the lic plate and wait and do the full switch next summer

Sounds like a good plan :thumb: :thumb:  You'll just have to register it as an 05 whenever you have inspection.  Till then I wouldn't worry about it, I haven't met a cop yet that knew where the VIN plate on a bike was or even gave a shaZam! :icon_rolleyes:

i made a mistake, i just got off the phone with the guy that owns the bike, it is a 04.  it was purchased in 06 new from the dealer and he crashed it doing the damage to the forks and wheels a month later.  it has been stored at the dealership since then.  everytime i go to the dealers, alpha sports, i see the bike so i know it well.  i am there pretty much everyday loitering :)
