Title: rust....I already tried the search
Post by: brown.rw on July 02, 2007, 07:53:37 AM
I just bought my first GS...a 2002.

I was aware of the rust problems before buying a GS from reading forums and talking to owners. I have gotten a few tips on cleaning and prevention (through word of mouth and using the search bar). Unfortunately, many of this tips are for bolt heads and black frames. My frame is silver and as limited rust is, you can see it is  located near/on the fork.

The kicker is I live is south Florida where it will rain everyday for the next 4 months and the humidity will be 80-90 percent with temps comfortably in the 90s. To top it off I live in an apt. with no garage. I will be using the bike for commuting so it will get ridden 4-7 days a week.

The questions are then: What are the best ways to remove rust in these areas of the bike? and what is the best prevention methods?

I will eventually replace the bolts with stainless to make life easier for me...but i can no replace the frame.

Thanks for all of the help.

Ok...well I am having issues with the pic. upload. I will post a picture once I have it figured out.

Clean it and get the loose rust off and invest in some Por-15, that stuff is amazing.  you have to paint over it but it will stop the rust from coming back!

You mean just put the neverdul over it and leave it there? how long? How exactly is "leaching" done?
