I am looking for some new grips that are fatter and will suck up some vibration. I never noticed how small the GS grips were until riding some other bikes and then riding the GS. I guess they are made for people with small hands?
I remember something about Katana grips, is it the stock ones? What about aftermarket ones and do they come with the throttle tube?
Yes Stock Katana grips. They should come with the throttle tube. They drop right in where the GS grips were. Aftermarket grips are ok too but they dont come with the throttle tube. However the GS tube dont have any retaining tounges in them. The katana ones do. So using the GS throttle tube you could put on a set of aftermarket grips. No idea which is better. Never had aftermarket ones. But wait, I have on the bling bling bike...Ok The Kat ones are better but if you buy good aftermarket ones you may be very very close to them.
Cool.

Any year to say when I tell the parts man?
You better have him bring a whole bucket full and you pick the best. I never ever take the only one that is offered if I am paying their asking price. If you pick the price I am picking the product, if you pick the product I pick the price. Anyway 89+ is all the same...even 88 the first year of the 600 would prolly be the same but just to be sure.
Cool.

Went to look at grips today and the Katana grips look and feel exactly like the stock GS ones, even went and looked at the ones on the new bikes and its the same.
I want something fatter around, all the gel and other ones they had were the same as the GS. The had some ones for 7/8" bars that were the chrome and foam and they were nice and fat but they werent open ended and prob wouldnt look right on the GS. Dont they make larger diameter grips? I hate that my fingers touch each other.
There aren't any real fat grips out there. I got the thickest gel grips I could find and they've been working OK. Bar end weights made more of a diffrance (bike had aftermarket bars with no weights when I got it).
I've read about people filling the handlebars with BB's or shot to add weight and absord the vibes. I can't comment on its effectiveness since I haven't tried it. I'm personally not bothered by the vibrations on my bike :)
I have a question: I bought some Lockhart grips from Bert's Mega Mall in Azusa. When got them home I realized the ones on my 89' were also Lockhart's and messured 4 5/8" long and so are the stock one's on a friends 99'. When I messured the new lockharts I just bought, they are 5 1/8". Do grips come in different lengths? Or, do they compress/shrink to fit? 1/2" seems a lot of difference.
Thanks,
Paul
i can tell you that the kat and gs grips are different in feel. when i was installing mine i forgot to get grip glue and didn't realize this till after i got the kat throttle side on. so i rode to the store with one grip of each on the bike. the kat grip felt a lot better than the gs grip when i had one hand on each. i like the kat grips personally. however, if you want to try for a fatter gel grip, trying getting a pair of pro gel race grips. we sell them where i work and they feel really soft and pretty decent. they're not really much bigger, but if you get the model that's honeycombed they'd probably work out for ya.
If your grips look and feel just like kat grips...maybe someone switched them before you got the bike.
And Pkasso...the grips come in diff lengths...but I have only seen 5 and 6 inch ones...I am sure other sizes like 4.5 or 5.5 are there but 4 and 5/8 I doubt it. You can trim it a little or move controls around a little and fit them. They dont shrink too well...with the grip glue etc you may stretch it a little and that may help it stay on better. When you stretch them they get smaller in dia...As per poissons law...
Cool.

I didnt ride the Katana they had there but I checked out the grip and put my hand around it and it felt and had the same design/pattern on the rubber grip as mine. I think they only changed the battery on my bike tho I am the 3rd owner and it had 2000 miles when I got it about 4 months ago. I'll have to look at another GS and see. Do they make grips you can glue on top of the existing grips?
Same design as yours...you have Kat grips. No year of the GS had the tiny diamond strip - plain bar strip all around. Old GS had tiny diamond all around, newer GS had large diamond all around. Post a pic if you can.
Cool.

Man I hate to feel the stock GS ones then.
Here is the best picture I have right now but can take more when I get off work.

The design is sorta a slanting section with bumps in the slants. Kinda hard to see there. Anyone have pics of stock grips or Katana ones online?
Ok those aren't Kat ones...they are stock GS...that large diamond...I got confused...its the slant bar....Anyway old katana 89-97 ones. I'll post pic if I can.
Cool.

Hmm I guess 2002-2003 get the GS style ones now. I think it was a 2003 model on the floor, brand new bike. They have a used one in the back I'll have to go take a look at it I forget what year it is. Might be hope yet, now if I can sneak in a screwdriver, wd40, and my old grips and do a switcheroo!
