Reading through the wiki about exhaust, I read that our pipe is the same diameter of the R6 exhaust.
I found this on ebay super cheap, so I snagged it:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170126288765
With it being so cheap I figured I couldn't go wrong. I'm assuming it should offer a better flowing system than the stock can since this was made for a 4 cylinder engine. I didn't want anything fancy or expensive, just something to replace the stock can, the previous owner got a little road rash on it.
Where can I get that bracket/strap that wraps around the can that bolts to the bike's frame? I doubt this can will come with one.
Anyway, I have zero experience with exhaust in general, so I'm asking for your opinions now.. When I get it, I'm going to take it to local muffler shop and see if they'll do it for me, and how much they'll do it for. What price range am I looking at?
While I'm doing the exhaust, I'd also like to paint the header. Should I paint it AFTER i get the new can put on? What all prep work is involved? Just cut the stock can off the pipe a couple of inches after the collector? Then for paint, just sand it down pretty good, and put a few coats of black grill paint on it?
Sorry for the long winded post, I just want to cover all my bases so I won't have any surprises pop up along the process...
Thanks for all the info and help!
Correct on the paint part.I'd wait until after the can is mounted. This way you only have to by exhaust gaskets once. Some people say reuse the gaskets but if they leak bad enough it may damage the engine. You may have to rejet.Free flowing exhaust = to lean of an engine = sever engine damage.Hopa disa helps ya.
dude go to one of your local bike shops...not a stealership though........any local bike shop should have used exhaust brackets laying around that they would love to sell and or get rid of.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that part. I have 40 pilots, 145 mains in it right now for the lunchbox, and I bought a set of 150 mains locally a while back, they're waiting in a drawer for the day I upgraded the exhaust :) ... I don't really know how to tell if it's rich or lean, right now it feels like it's running pretty good though.
Thanks, I'll check out the bike shops and see if anyone has a spair bracket laying around, I never thought of that :)
You guys are awesome, thanks for the help!
Exhaust came in the mail today, that was pretty quick.
Anyway, this thing is FREAKING HUGE!!
I hope it doesn't look out of place once I get it installed :o
The can has a bracket built into it like the stock can, so I won't need a new bracket/strap thing.
Next step is to get this thing welded up... I have a feeling this isn't going to be easy...
I'll post some pics tomorrow, I'm sleep now ;)
That exhaust is like the R1 I just picked up tonight. The end should have a flare and a clamp on it.Just stick it up there and mark it about 2 1/2 inches longer than you need. Then cut it off.You should be able to slip it on and tighten the clamp on the pipe.As far as jetting,It's up in the air.If it runs and starts with no problems leave it.If it's running bad do a search for rejetting here.Good luck.
BTW,the R6 exhaust pipe is a high quality stainless steel and will not weld to the mild steel the GS exhaust is made of.
thanks for the info, I'll definitally need to put pics up, because it looks like this pipe was cut, and there's no clamp. maybe I'm wrong.
this is what it looks like
(http://matt.host-it-here.org/exhaust/IMG_1315.JPG)
this is what the end looks like. maybe this is the flare, and the GS500 exhaust pipe goes inside of this, and a clamp around this flair ? I need to get that clamp then!
another pic
(http://matt.host-it-here.org/exhaust/IMG_1317.jpg)
this picture compares the size of the GS exhaust to this R6 can... huge difference  I hope I got the right one lol
Sorry i couldn't do better, I was a 1 man camera team this morning...

To see if your running lean or rich, just check your plugs, black = rich, white = lean. The color you want is lt brown / tan
Here is my R1 it's very close to yours except the pipe is larger.I'll have to flare my GS exhaust pipe to fit my exhaust. My exhaust hanger is riveted on.

Heres the clamp.Mine is a slip fit.Yours is too. Some are welded.

I've got a stock R6 can and an aftermarket one in my garage. I haven't gotten around to trying either one of them. I think you have to cut and re-weld your header pipe to make the angle, but I'm not sure.
^^ Yeah, that's an option... going by the wiki, another option is to put a few washers where it's bolted to the frame to push it out some more to clear everything.
looks sweet post some pics when you get it on there. i have n't got round to a can yet. full system costs far too much all i want is the sound.
just take it to your local auto exhaust shop and take the bike to so they can bend the pipe to fit. they can also expand your header pipe enough so that you dont have to have anything extra welded on. i put a v & h off a 954 on my bike and thats what i had to do. it clears the swing arm and mounts to a piece of flat steal that i drilled two holes. the "bracket" is just to drop the stock bolt hole so there isnt so much stress on the pipe.
The stock cans on R6 bikes are pretty quiet. (and freakin big).

Not true. I have TIG'd mild onto 316. If it just has to stick together, any metal can be welded to any metal. Problems arise when you need specific properties such as strength or corrosion resistance.

hey buddy! That's the same can I got! You'll be very surprised how LARGE it is :icon_mrgreen:
No I have not mounted the can yet!
Waiting on pay day so I can go to an exhaust shop.
Let us know how yours goes!
I haven't mounted my R1 can.I'm saving it for a 90 GS build.
I can wait mine to arrive at me ! my OEM can have several holes around the small escape from the back of the pipe and soun like a freaking landmower. I dont think that it will be difficult to install . but i will keep you on touch.
the first one to install the pipe wiil have this for prize
(http://www.lastek.com.au/wonderwoman.jpg)
lol I put a bunch of holes in the back of my GS can too...
I started off with 2 ... but it was TERRIBLE... 4 was better, but still terrible... ended up doing 8 holes, and I like the way it sounds
I won't be able to do anything for another couple of weeks.. I'm kinda tight on cash at the moment...

I'm swapping to a Yohi pipe from an 89 FZR600 this weekend! :thumb: The mid pipe from that one looks like I can swap it out no problem to the factoy head/collector just below the footpegs. I'm coming off of a Devil bikes slip on... System #2(#3 if you count the factory one)...
dude that sounds terrible like some demented weed wacker
hope to get my r6 pipe mounted as soon as possible
i am anxious to see it, i wonder if it will look too big like and old gsxr rear end fitted to a gs? sort of lick a woman with a HUGE ass, not j-lo but like monique
lol, how many holes are drilled in the exhaust?
it sounds like my buddies quad

+1... They're WAAAAY too quiet. I can't wait to get a new can on my R6. And the finish of the can is out of place on the bike too.
:flipoff:
i recived my can today !! WOW that thing is big. he he
i took about 30 minuts looking the bike and the can !!! figuring out how tha hell I will put that jet tubine in my bike!!
its easy I need to bend a little the end of the midpipe on r6 exhaust , i will cut the pipe about 5 inches after the Y and expand the end a little to fit in r6 midpipe . i will let the lenght of the r6 midpipe (no cut) so I will need something like an extention to fit on the rear peg . if I use the pipe with any extension it will be to close to the front peg.

How's the progress?
you will be surprised how GOOD it looks on your bike. trust me. I've got 2005 GSXR 600 can fitted on my bike! and it's the same size as R6 can(I think). It looks teffific in my opinion!
the only con is that was harder to install because it was BOLT-ON.
anyway, here are the pictures: http://bikepics.com/members/kmlkrk/04gs500/
let me know what you think, do you like it?
cheers
KaMeL
yea !!!! i got my r6 can installed !!! was a f%$king pain in the ass its a super big and almost doeas not fit !! i dont like the idea of having the can so close to the front peg so y put the bolt on about 3 or 4 inches in the back of the original and use a hayabusa lower link as an extention from the back peg the the bolt on . it look big in the bike !! but know the bike have an agressive look also one of the thing i dont like on the GS500 is the very thin look on the back of the bike !! with this can when you see the back of the bike now is like a big bike !!!!....
I was at 5 different muffler shop and no one wants to do that job. at the end i found someone the accept the job . and at half time he say to me if he would know how difficult is he would not accept but he start the job so he have to finish !!!
WOW dude! this thing is really huge. I thought GSXR's can is l;arge but your is like a monster :icon_mrgreen:
but I still think it looks waaayyyy better than stock!!
good work!!
cheers
KaMeL
Good LORD that's HUGE!
Looks like you have a missile launcher tube on the back. :icon_mrgreen:
If YOU like it, that's all that's important!
Glad you got it on. :thumb:
between the bus sticker and that can you are firmly planted in squid territory and it will be damn hard to get out :cookoo:

:icon_rolleyes:. My feelings stand firm..
great lookin can Got any sound clips?
yeah, do you have got some sound clips? is there any difference in sound? cause my GSXR can does not produce any sort of superb sound.
actually I have drilled a couple of tiny holes in the back of it and it sounds kinda funny on idle, but it sounds cool when I'm slowing down before intersection :icon_twisted: there is nice popping coming out of the exhaust
in the future I'd like to install BOLT-ON YOSHIMURA TRS can for 2005 GSXR (I have a flange so it's just a matter of minutes to put it on :) )
I'm just broke at the moment  and the can is around 250-280 shipped, so I'll have to wait :)
cheers

That's muffler looks odd.
I wonder what the weight is ?
I have the typical V&H, and wondered what a larger canister would look like. Thanks to a few folks here, I'll stick with the V&H.
I was looking at the bikes at work (machinists, we all own mc's) the other day. the differences on STOCK bikes seem to be preportional.
the hd's have low and long pipes. the gs stocker and V&H matches. the kawi bruiser/cruiser is a little heavy looking but sleek.
Putting something this large on a smaller bike almost makes it look more like a liter bike. I'd actually prefer a shorty, but that's just me.
Do the R6/R1 canisters sound good on the GS ? I wondered if there was enough flow through it for it to sound proper at higher rpm's.
The inline 4's always have that 'scream' at higher rpms, but there is likely a good deal more flow compared to a 2 banger at 4-5 thou less rpm.
Anywho, fun projects. Enjoy the results :)

Mild steel to stainless is actually MIG weldable. I made ~15 flanges that had shiny pipes and ugly ass round plates for the pipe. However, you cannot weld any metal to any metal. Aluminum and steel - excellent example. There is rods that will weld them, however as soon as it cools, the parts will separate. They expand at hugely different rates, and they cannot stay together at the cold state.
Cool.
Srinath.
BTW,the R6 exhaust pipe is a high quality stainless steel and will not weld to the mild steel the GS exhaust is made of.

For those who have corrected me on this.I believe my IMM teacher may have been speaking of structural welds. The class he was teaching was very out dated,so I'm sure his knowledge was out dated. The only reason we touched on welding was in case we needed to send something out to be welded.Oh,I guess I better clear this up now.IMM=Industrial Maintinance Mechanic
1- for welding ... no it can not be welded the midpipe tube on the R6 can is titanium (i think) and in the shop try to weld with 2 different electrical welder and with GAS (acetileno) and non of the welder could get that thing weld on ..
2- sound . the sound its very cool in idle sounds like an big bike. riding at low rpm sound very cool ! like a original R6 Yamaha when hit the full gas sound pretty much like original CAN but a littler more agresive. i will take video clip so you can listen to !
I can't wait for the sound clip :icon_mrgreen:
Just got an R6 exhaust and I just can't figure out how to install it. The diameter of the r6 slip-on is seems much larger than the GS mid pipe. And the angle seems wrong. I'm starting to wonder if I should just sell it and keep the stock can.
I like the look of this huge can, but I'm not sure it DIY job to install it. I've never welded before. Any advice is appreciated.
Yea ... dude, I spend hours @ junkyards, dealers and stores ... they are all annoyed with me measuring stuff.
Very very few of em work without modding stuff.
I have a slip on can in Ti for sale, and sorry I cant quite fix your problem unless you are in my area. And get it mangled up by welding stuff on it.
Anyway Ti can blue to flame color brand new oval, direct fit on 01+ GS.
This is the post for that.

Dunno what its for, I have had it for years, its brand new, never been out of the box. Jet kit included.
Cool.
Buddha.
I think you should put on a bigger can. Bigger than the actual bike.
Very nice grasshopper. The buddha has taught you well.
Now make em cry ...
Cool.
