Title: Finally got one!!
Post by: lilbill on July 10, 2007, 07:36:17 PM
So I have been looking for a good gs for awhile all over the internet and finally found one...where? in my local newspaper's classified section.  :dunno_white:

I'm really pumped (first bike) :thumb:

She's a 1992 with 7800 miles...new tires, good brakes, and a spotless (inside) tank...only problem are those pesky leaky fork seals.

Here are a few pics...the pink needs to go and I think that I will repaint once I get practiced and out of that "will probably drop it" stage...I'm thinking sunburst metallic orange (2004 corvette color)

A few questions for you all:
I've read that the cams are somewhat noisy on the bike and just wanted to verify that it's like a quiet whirring noise (like a small turbo)

Also while I'm changing the fork seals, should I put 15W oil in instead of the 10W and change out the springs for progressives (they're really soft now)?  Or just do the heavier oil and see how it rides and then decide on the springs? (BTW I weigh 190lbs.)

Thanks in advance and thanks for all of the great info already :thumb:

Yes , that's the noise , and YES change the springs . Ride it first obviously , but if the springs are stock you'll feel it diving on you a lot and it'll bottom out on hard bumps

How much do you weigh?  At about 150 I didn't really need the progressives, just 15w oil.  I put in some old GSXR750 springs...just a little stiffer, and was quite pleased with it all about.  If you're a heavier sort of guy the progressives are probably a must have.

Ride the bike before doing anything to the springs.

Replace oil with 15wt ride the bike and see how you like it.

If you think it still needs to be stiffer then do the progressive springs.

I weigh 230 to 240 installed progressive with 1" spacers left the fork oil alone and it was very stiff I didn't need to change the oil.

Oh and whatever his name is atm . . .he's a freak right along with Micheal Jackson.

Springs: try the oil and ~30mm spacers first.  The spacers alone fixed my suspension, and I'm 185-190 lb, same as you more or less.

Fork seals: replace them.  Redo the top dust seals on the forks if they're wrecked.  Then put on dirt bike fork boots before remounting the forks.  The boots will keep dust and crud from eating your fork seals again.  And they have a cool, retro look to them!

Thanks for all of the help...I'll try the 15wt oil and see.  :thumb: I that the purple is growing on me too  :icon_mrgreen:

By the way is there anything important in the tool kit (mine didn't have one) that I should make sure to have?

You can find a tool kit on ebay from time to time, I also saw a good post on here somewhere on putting a basic one together. The only "Special" tool I can think of is the spanner wrench for the rear shock but there are ways to adjust it w/o one  :thumb:
