Title: speedometer cable removal?
Post by: Jonathan on August 01, 2003, 04:37:10 PM
My speedometer hasn't been working since my crash.  I'm certain it is the cable because it has a lot of scrapes on it.  I bought a new cable a month ago but haven't been able to get the original cable off, hehe.

How does it come off?  Someone told me to remove the front wheel.... So basically when I remove the front wheel the cable falls off at both ends?

The cable screws into the back of the speedo.  You will have to remove the front wheel to get the "Sensor" off the rim.  Then unscrew the cable out of the speedo housing.

You don't have to take the wheel off, unless the 'sensor' is b0rked.  If it's just the cable, you don't need to remove the wheel.

I just did the cable swap a few days ago.  Took 2 minutes, total.  Unscrew the cable from the back of the Speedo.  On the LEFT side of the bike, on the wheel, where the cable attaches, look for a small phillips-head screw.  Remove that screw, and then pull the cable gently out of the wheel.  Re-route the new cable the same way, and insert the end gently into the wheel, and into the speedo itself.  It's simple really!

On the subject of cables.....heres a good tip if you find your speedo/tacho cable is constantly vibrating off. Instead of tightening the collar with pliers or similar and risking breaking the male thread wrap a couple of turns of PTFE tape on the threads. It prevents the collar coming off and still allows for easy removal.
