Title: Interesting issue
Post by: Oklahoma_Mike on July 16, 2007, 07:26:43 AM
Ok so I have a few issues (and some with my bike). I have done the research, but my situation is different than all the threads I have found because my bike has several mods so the close to factory setup that is suggested in the other posts won't work. :dunno_white:

The Bike: 1997 with a lunch box K&N, Dynojet stageIII, stock exhaust with the rear baffle plate of the can drilled out to flow better.

Symptoms: bike has a sporadic idle once it has warmed up and at full throttle a medium hesitation. The bike will still accelerate at a slower rate than normal. You can fill it surging. Ease off of the throttle just a little and it accelerates normally.

While the choke is on and the bike is warming up you can keep the idle down around 1200-2000, but once it has warmed up it idles up to around 3000-5000. If I am riding and use the clutch and brake to bring the bike down to 1200-2000 at a light it will usually stay there until I give it some gas then it hangs in the 3000-5000 range. Throttle is not sticking.

The full throttle issue doesn't seem to change if I put the choke on. The hesitation doesn't get any better or worse.

I pulled the carbs last night and they where very clean. I took some AWG 14 wire and separated a few strands and used that to insure the pilot jet was clean. I could see that the hole was clean and the cavity of the jet looked clean. The main was very clean as well. I sprayed carb cleaner through all the small passages of the carb to insure no blockage.

The stageIII was put in by the previous owner so here is what is in the carbs.

Main jet: 128
Pilot jet: 37.5
Idle air screw: 2 turns out. I have tried 2 and a half and the situation seemed to get worse though only slightly so I can't be for sure.

Anyone got a similar setup that is working good?
What are you running for Main/Pilot/Idle air?

Thank you in advance for the Info.

Yoshi can, K&N lunchbox; so a very similar setup to yours.

No Dynojet garbage.  From all I've heard of it, it's best disposed of or given for free to ignorant racer-boys.

Anyway:
(1) Stock needles, 2 #4 washer shims per needle
(2) #40 pilot jets
(3) 2.5 turns out on the air screws
(4) #145 main jets

Previous owner had put in DJ and messed up the install badly.  Drilled out the Dynojet restrictor (NOT the plug) in each slide.

-b.

Thank you. You got any suggestions? Im thinking it is running lean on the pilot system and main. I need to check and see if the needle is shimed  I forgot to do that last night.

You're lost, plain and simple.

1) Check the needles
a) Start with e-clip in groove 2nd from the top
b) Make sure all the stock spacers are on the needle--should be a metal washer and plastic donut under the e-clip and a washer above--plus a small Dynojet washer above the e-clip for now

2) Inspect the slides and see if air correctors are threaded into the bottom (as opposed to drilled holes) FYI

3) Road test

4) For further help getting dialed in:

IM NOT LOST I AM SITTING AT MY DESK!!

Thank you very much for the intel!! I'll let ya know whats up!

"plus a small Dynojet washer above the e-clip" this is what is missing. I only have one plastic washer above the e clip.

ok
Needle is as follows from bottom to top:
Stock plastic doughnut washer
SS washer
Eclip on 2nd from top
Plastic spring end washer

air correctors have both holes drilled and threaded with one hole having white plastic orifice and the other hole open :bs:

I am thinking of adding a #4 (IF I CAN FIND ONE)under the eclip. Ideas?

DAMN I mean how hard is it to find a #4 washer. Home depo/NO, Walmart/NO, Atwoods/NO! #6 is the smallest I could find.

PS I am going to pickup a 140 main to drop in.
