Title: Nomex
Post by: MrDan on July 16, 2007, 12:56:26 PM
Ok - random question.  So my sister just got her flight suit for helicopter runs - she's an ER doc in Ann Arbor/Detroit.  It's a pretty cool Nomex suit.  Anyone have any experiences with those?  I was thinking it would be pretty cool to wear to ride - under my jacket, but over jeans.  Would it provide any protection whatsoever?  Or only if I happened to ride through a fire or something  :icon_twisted:

I happened to find a used one on ebay for $15 shipped so I'm intrigued.  they usually go for a few hundred dollars.

Thoughts?

Yeah .. that's what I've been finding.  Also was told that the fire resistant chemical/whatever actually goes away slowly as you wash them :(

Nomex is also an excellent electrical insulator so I wouldnt worry too much about being struck by lightning either

Don't think chemical or fire retardancy are big reasons for wearing Nomex riding gear.  Not the softest of materials as I recall.

Go for abrasion resistance -- Cordura 600

This was more for comfort/look.  I'd be wearing it with my nice leather jacket and over jeans - seems easier to find a Nomex suit that fits than a pair of leather or cordura pants - haven't found a pair that fits well enough to ride in a few years.

+1 Not going to give you much if any abrasion protection, especially on pavement.
