Hi I have a 1999 GS 500 and just recently I have been having problems when starting from dead stop. It seems that I have to give a lot of throttle to keep the bike from stalling.
Also, I have noticed that when my fuel is in the on position I have to switch to the reserve quite early (still lots of fuel in the tank). Do, any of you have any idea what my problem is?
Any suggestions and help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the filter might be dirty, is there any rust in the tank?

No rust in the tank but maybe I do need to change the air filter. I know nothing so would you mind telling me what kind of air filter I need to replace it with and where I might be able to get it (ie canadian tire or actual bike shop)
Thanks for you help and suggestions.

Actually I was thinking the fuel filter, which is in the tank under the petcock (the fuel valve/tank outlet). It's a pain in the butt to check.
The air filter is pretty sturdy and can usually be cleaned out with some compressed air. It only needs to be replaced occasionally. It's under the tank and seat but you should be able to at least get a good look at it just by taking the seat off and getting some light in there.

Ahh yes, fuel filter makes even more sense! Once I figure out how to check the fuel filter I will. Thanks for the suggestion.

How about checking the in-line fuel filter thet is between the petcock and the carbs. It's easier to check and replace, plus it only cost a couple bucks for a new one.
