Well, first off I've been looking for a bike for quite a while. I got to the ride GS5 before I bought it. My brother in-law (Nick) owned it. Let me ride it once cuz he wanted me to get a bike to cruze with him. I was hooked on the GS5. Well long story short he almost died from stupidity on his part and a car drivers part. Car stopped halfway through a right hand turn and he was doing like 60 in a 25mph zone...rear ended the saturn, and messed himself up pretty bad, Cracked his skull, broke him arm, ripped half is face off (was still attacked...just not fully), broke 3 ribs, his knee cap got ripped out (they found it the day after it happened), also messed up his ankle real bad. he said he dropped 2 gears and got on the breaks and said he was going about 30 when he smacked the saturn....well a week and a half later he's out hobbiling around...also he didn't have any gear. Well, my brother took the damaged bike away from nick obviously. I managed to talk to him and I ended up with a damaged GS5. The damage, bent fork tubes, the fork stabilizer thingy above the front fender, the front fender was dead, the clutch cover had a chunk taken out of it, the electronics were gone(the bolt that holds the ignition rotor broke inside the crank, but I got it out), the front brake cylinder was broke, the tanks dented, the headlight and brackets were tweaked really badly, header has a ding in each side, the rear break lever and bent under the the bracket that holds it, the tail is cracked a bit but other then that just a few scuffs. It's a 89 also.
Heres a few pics of it:

It also so happens that I had a 83 kawasaki zx750 that was given to me a while back, it's not even close to running...no carbs, no ignition, no body work...ect. Well before I bought the GS5 from my brother/nick I checked to see if the fork tubes were the same size,...cha ching!...they were. Well basicly I swapped the kawasaki tubes, wheel/tire, the speedo sender/ and brakes, also swapped over the front brake lever...and to some some tinfoil as a spacer to get it to sit right. Heres a pick of the donor bike after I got the front end off.

Then like 3 days later I went to a salvage yard and got the side cover and related electrical....was off some none suzuki bike thought...but was an exact match....strange. Threw that on and swapped my moped battery over and fired her up. YAY :icon_mrgreen: ! I later took the tweeked headlight off and threw on some fog lights set up for single low and double high. Took the speedo needle off the zx750 to replace the broken needle in the gs tach.
Here's some current pictures of it:

Still needs to be done:
Get new headers or get them repaired
Get a clutch Cover Gasket
Get New fork oil put in
Get new tires
Adjust the height of the front
What I'd Like to do after the rest is done:
Hide the wires in between the headlights somehow
Get the katana FE
New brake pads
New tank
Recover the seat (with something a little stickier)
Get some aftermarket fairings (don't get me wrong I like the naked look but I kinda like the "clothed" look a little more)
Throw down some paint
and put on some "tron stripes"...like on that old thread
Also nick told me that he thinks it has an aftermarket cam in it and it also has a V&H but I dont know if it's full or a slip on.
The Bike Price sofar:
Bike/title 500
Clutch cover/stator 100
Fog Lights 54
Dioads (sp?) 1
Total: 655
The Gear Price:
Helmet 200
(gona get more gear with in the month)
Anyone got any other ideas things to do or things I should check? Mainly looking for moderate to cheap prices for doing this all...right now I only have $655 into the bike. Also from the front end the rim and brake rotor still look good in case anyones is interested in them...i'm in estes park colorado in case so ones interested and wants to check them out.
That is a damn good , and easy way to have a Dual front set up , and i dont think anyone had mentioned it :thumb: Some it new for people to no
as for the bike , looks really nice dude ,
does go 2 show , always wear your gear , hope he gets better
Interesting FrankenBike. Will make a cool fighter!
Good work. :thumb:
Others will like to hear of other direct bolt on fork replacement options.
shaZam! man clean out your yard....what do your neighbors think?  i love that bob marley scooter in the back ground of one of the pics...that has "stop me i am stoned" written all over it
Looks like a good candidate for a part ou.....
Oh, you're going to ride it ?
Hmmm...
Welcome and good job on getting that bike ridable! :thumb:
Is that an 18" or 19" front rim?

it's an 18.
Also what do you guys think would be cool to make it more "fighter-esk"?
Those lights make it look...................freaky. :o
Kinda like Johnny 5 from Short Circuit or something. :icon_lol:
Still, good job on the progress and getting stuff swapped in and out from other makes.
Looks like you're well on your way.
hey the front off the bike looks like "shortcircuit" the robot on the movie I dont remember the name of the robot !!!!!! with those headlights hehehe !!
good job !!
men whe just think the same freaking thing jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja
Wow! What a transformation! Keep us posted on your progress!! :thumb:

Yes it was and later on Johny 5.
Also some updates...I ordered the clutch cover gasket and a new set of tires....The tach is going out now....sometimes doesn't work till like around 6000 then other times it's telling me I'm ideling at 4000...any ideas on a fix other then getting a new tach....also I've been looking at the acewall gauge...any place in the states I could get one?
I cant remember who found the site .hm i gave the address to Spcterry , for the US market of acewell ,
I have a acewel dude ,works mint :thumb:
Took me a few minutes to dig this up:
http://www.electrosport.com/electrosport_speedo_3900.html
Still haven't ordered mine. Need to get the Carbs done first and get a new front tire :icon_rolleyes:
congrats on the transformation and getting the bike put together. I am wondering though if he cracked up the engine casing that bad and messed up the front forks also...did he tweak the frame out at all???

nope...engine case is just fine! the front fork though....just the tubes got tweeked....also thanks for the acewall link dude.
I'm getting anothr weird problem now...the fog lights i mounted up don't seen to be as bright as they usualy are all the time...like sometimes they're like blinding bright then other times they seem kinda dim...they're 55watt if it makes a difference...any ideas?
The acewell is great , id put my seal of approval on it
Mounted on my Kat front End

At night it glows Blue
any ideas on my head/fog light problem?
Ummm.........could be the regulator............does the intensity increase/decrease in correspondence to RPM's???
nope...just randomly...and for verying amounts of time...sometime bright for the whole ride sometimes half the ride
well time for a few updates I guess....I got the new tires on and broken in. Also got the clutch cover gasket so yay...no more leaking makes me happy. Got a new battery thrown in it.....so the only things left to do is get the headers fixed (looking into that today) and to get the fork filled with oil and mess with preload. One kinda depressing thing though...I bought a 15t front sproket thinking I could get a bit more umph out of it...ordred it, got it...when I took the cover off to install it I saw the bike already had a 15 tooth....but it didn't look too happy...so i put the new one on...so now I kinda wish I went for the 14t front. Next time I get a little extra to throw down.
Still got my headlight problem...isn't quite as bad now that I got the real battery in...the one I used for a while was a moped battery....really small. Also my tach is bugging out on me now...doesn't show the propper RPMs...just kinda jumps around making a wirrrring noise...So I'm hoping to get some extra cash soon to get the acewell.
I also need a front fender....wey riding is horrable right now..sprays water everywhere....and i got a cool idea to make one fairly cheapy...I just need to buy some diamond plate alum....and cut out a semi cross shape to it then bend it and drill a few holes to mount it.

You've gone into so much change/swap/repair that I would suspect a connection in the system...or a switch contact. The headlight circuit for the stock GS is...(click on the thumbnail for a full size)

I cannot be certain of how you have repaired anything so you must double check your electrical connections and possibly replace any "twist & tape" junctions with reliable, mechanical electric connections.

If your tach is the original GS tach, it sounds like the drive cable is broken. They can spin and catch or spin and miss often. Check to make sure it is screwed onto the tach and engine interface tightly. My money is on the broken cable - essentially a long, tight coiled spring - probably near the tach end.
The worst case is that the tach drive inside the engine is bad. :dunno_white:
BTW - good job on an ambitious project. You get the Effort Award!
the drive in the tach must be bad....the cable spins then it's not screwed into the tach and it was screwed in pretty good.....and the electrical was just fine from the crash...there is a bit of "other" crap from the guy before my brother inlaw...maybe I'll go through the wiring harness and fix it up.
well only new update is that I did the forks today...Replaced the fork seals and threw some oil in (10W) then put 31psi of air in and it's nice and tight! Also pulled the rear shock off the zx750...looks like it may fit the gs and it's an air shock....so I could adjust the stiffness and it has a 4 stage rebound adjustment....anyone got the measurements on the gs rear shock...like the distance between the mounting tabs...on the top and the bottom...and the length of the shock from the mounting holes
does any one have a gs shock that isn't installed? I'm wondering about those measurements ....the gs is the only way I have to get around right now so If I could get some info before I tear the rear appart to possibly find out it wont work.
Yea i do dude .ill go measure it now :thumb:
Couldnt find the Gs shock , found my Gsx Katana Rear shock ,and it was 35 cm End to End ,
Its a direct bolt in ,so im sure it would be ok :thumb:
GS shock center to center of the mounting holes: 292mm
