Title: In hawaii and want to ride
Post by: mjn12 on July 19, 2007, 01:24:22 PM
So I'm in hawaii right now - waikiki to be more specific and I found out that they rent motocycles everywhere.  And to 21 year olds!! (thats me, just turned the 11th).  So we were driving up one of the coastal highways and I decided that i absolutely have to do this.  You can get a 750 nighthawk for about 65 bucks a day from a couple of the major rental places here (they rent harleys and bmw's too).  Anyone ever done this here? Any reccomendations about where to rent from or where to ride to?  Let me know if you know of a cheaper place to rent from.  I will post some pics afterwards. This place really is paradise.

Someone I know rented a bike there...  But, I didn't get all the details.

Just go for it and don't worry about saving $5...   :thumb:

I'm not worried about five dollars - I spen money like its going out of style.  I just was hoping one of the shady little shacks might rent one cheap enough that I can get if for a few days.

I wasn't trying to insult you... I was just trying to say:

Go have fun and take lots of pics, so I can live vicariously through you!   :icon_mrgreen:

I dunno about the bmws, they all seem to be a little tall for me. I'm feeling like one of the cruisers, somethign I can flat foot easily, especially since I wont be used to it.  Still trying to find the right day, have to work it around the family stuff we're doing.

RVert - didn't mean to sound like I was on the defensive.

I'm excited, this place really is amazing.

Hmm...  I wouldn't mind having your problem.  Tell ya what, why don't you come back here and ride my bike, I'll go suffer for you in HI.

Get the Beemer.  Especially if the insurance covers drop damage.   :icon_mrgreen:

Locally, the rental places typically run a charge against your credit card for the "security deposit" before you can ride, which is usually at least half of the deductible on the insurance option you choose.

Depending on the insurance you select, the deductible itself is from $2,000-$3,000. The more expensive insurance options can add $25 per day. So, you have to have a credit card that can withstand a charge of at least $1,500, plus the actual rental fees and insurance while you're riding... and if there's ANY damage to the bike, they can assess it as whatever they like up to the security deposit, and you have  absolutely no recourse.

Not as reasonable as it seems at first glance.

Edit: Just to clarify, by "locally" I meant around here, not Hawaii. No idea about there, could be worse, or, if there's enough competition, better.

Sounds cheaper to take the boat over there and bring your GS with you.

Well If I can't find a bike for anything reasonable I'll be on a moped. As long as I get to play on two wheels for a little while.

argh, things aren't looking good.  Tomorrow is my last day. It rained most of the day saturday and they were out of anything below 1000cc today.  Still this trip has been amazing.  Well see what I can do about getting some pictures somewhere besides facebook so I can link to them here.

Well renting the bike fell through, but the trip was still amazing. I'm sitting in the vegas airport and figured I'd upload a few pictures.  Hawaii is such a beautiful place you look around and can't believe you're actually seeing this. Looking back on it, I have a hard time actually believing I was there taking these pictures.

Just a few of the scenery and what not.

Yup, yup.. amazing place, and great pictures, you did a better job of catching the scale than most professionals. Was that all on Oahu?

The first time I went I was very impressed with Maui, but this last time... well, let's just say, next time you go, you might want to make a point of checking out Kaua'i. It's out-of-the-way, but worth it.

But... don't tell anyone.   ;)

Maynard??

Yeah, I wanted to spend some time on the other islands, but this was my dads work trip that he realized he could get us all along on frequent flyer miles and somehow got the second room comped.  The trip was actually free if we stayed in oahu.  Seeing as I had just lost all my play money in vegas the week before I was kinda stuck. Beggars can't be choosers. I heard Oahu was one of the more crowded islands.
