Here is some reading on using another GS motor from an earlier generation....

There are more threads on motor swaps but you can search for them.

What is wrong with yours?

I know I've mentioned this recently, but don't forget that the 2004 is faired, and thus has an external oil cooler to compensate for the reduced airflow. The earlier engines will not be set up for that... which will greatly complicate a swap.

Or you could convert to a naked bike. Several here have.

you can use an older engine, from 89 and up. Gives you more choices

Really? I dont know though, the newer gs500 engines are already as slow as it is. I imagine the older ones are even worse lol. Plus my bike is alreays sort of naked cause I took off the left/right fairing, and was riding around like that for a while.

The only reason that the newer bikes have the external oil cooler is because the fairing interfered with the air flow to the air-cooled engine. If you don't have the fairing, you don't need the external oil cooler, so you can use earlier engines.

The horsepower ratings haven't changed. There may be subtle differences in stock performance, but they are much less than you can create yourself by rejetting, etc.

frankieG,

You dont want my farings, the only reason I am not using them is because my ex girlfriend layed my bike down and beat the farings to crap.
