So I picked up a 91 GS500E, and the bike was actually sitting for 7 years. I did everything it said to do on wikipedia on how to get a bike running thats been sitting. I removed the carbs and took em apart and cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. I left them in a bucket of gasoline so it can get any thing i missed. I sprayed compressed air in every hole. I got new spark plugs, new fuel lines and new gas(drained the old stuff out) and when I put it all back together, it was still bogging. If you tried to rev it up, it would die. To get the revs up, you have to slowly give it gas, When at one point I was able to ride it, the bike would bog really bad until I could get the revs up. Please help me, I know these bikes are awesome and I really want this to work. Thanks in advance for for everything,
did you clean the petcock and fuel mesh/filters also there are two vent holes in the gas cap that if plugged can cause problems. check and see if the plugs are gunged up
I checked out the petcock already and it looked good. I'll check the gas cap next, and the sparkplugs I just got seem to be a black again. It looks as if its running lean.
Did you check the jets or the floats to see if they were damaged or moveing freely.
yea, I checked them out, and everything seemed fine. I really dont know what else I can do. My last resort is to take it to a shop, but I dont want to get ripped for my money.

Whoa ... that would be rich, not lean. What happens if you take the air filter out (just for testing)?

that was the exact thing that happened to me, turned out it was just the fuel cap.
I forgot to say it was more like this, just a newer. Since they are brand new plugs. I havent been home yet to checkc my fuel cap. But that will be the first thing I do.

Try turning the petcock to prime if it runs smooth on prime the diaphram is bad.
I hope I can get some time tomorrow to check all this stuff out. If my diaphram is bad, do I need new carbs?

No.The diaphram is in the petcock and there is a little rubber button that turns to goo and the petcock want operate exactlly rite.
Read this.Dgyver tells what happens better than I do.

This link tells how to convert a petcock to no vacumme.

awesome thanks a lot. I hope I can get some free time today and try these things out. I'll update as soon as I get things started.
updates are what help others figure out their problems and then fix it
Ok so I checked everything out. The bike ran for a little bit before it died again.
I'm starting to think that theres something wrong with the vacuum or whatever it is on the top of the carbs. I'm talking about the upper T connector right above the lower one where the fuel goes. When ever I blow air into the upper T(I stop when fuel shoots out the jets) the bike starts up for a good 5 seconds and dies.
I really dont know what else to do. If theres anymore help out there, I'll gladly take any of it.
there is a vent for the carbs.it keeps a vacuum from building up inside the carbs.there is also a vacuum line that goes to the petcock, that vacuum pulls a little diaphram open while the engine is running. If all of this is clear and you have fresh fuel and bright blue spark,I'd say the jets inside the carb are partially blocked.
The little vaccum your talking about, Is the one connected to the frame petcock right? I have that going under the gas tank where it has that bent nipple. The first vent and vaccum line your talking about is the upper T connector I'm guessing, and thats going under the tank also but to the nipple facing straight down.
Do I have this wrong?
If so somebody please kick me!!!
Ok, so I've had this noise in my gas tank since I got it, i finally had time to check it out. I drained the gas and looked inside. It looks like a little elbow thing with a nipple at one end and some sort of inlet at the other. I'll try to take a picture of it soon. I really dont think it belongs in there so I leave it out for now.
I finally got the bike running. Its actually been running for the last week now. All it took was tlc, quiet time, a few beers, a drill, and some patience. I played with the air/fuel mixture and idle screw and everything went great after that. I even brought her on the freeway and went to a bike meet out in LA. All I can say is this bike is awesome. I love the way it sounds. I cant wait till I get my jets and uni pods and exhaust. I've already started on sanding the bike down and painted most parts flat black, just waiting for the gas to run out so I can get to the tank. Just want to say thank you all for the help, I wouldnt have gotten this bike running if it wasnt for GSTWIN.

Props to you dude. You worked your arse off on that bike. Lets see some pics once you get it painted. :thumb:
It would really be nice to see the result of all that hard work! Great job and best of luck with it from now on! ;)
heres a few pictures with the new paint. I still have to sand it down and put down another layer, but I'm happy with the way it turned out.
