I've got a K&N lunch box air filter for my GS, but for the life of me I can't get the darned thing to clamp properly to the carbs of my GS. I always manage to get 1 side on, and the other side falls off. Is there some trick to installing the thing?
Not really just back the scew clamp out as far as it will go without falling off. Slide one side in then the other. If your having trouble maybe slide one side in and tighten it down. Then slide in the other side.
Use a little motor oil or vegetable oil to lube the boots to make them slide on easier, should make the job simpler.
Heck, I was gonna suggest the opposite. I thought dry but OK some non oily stuff is better. I actually fit them to carbs outside and bolt carbs on, but I alsoe remove the boots with the carbs ... replace the phillips screws on the manifolds with hex head and you take off the whole thing.

Push in on the outsides of the filter to push the flanges into a more naturally oval shape. They come from K&N round, yet the carb inlet is an oval.

Use dish soap, heat the inlets a bit with a heat gun (don't melt them!), and use bigger (wider) hose clamps. The wider clamps will stay in position between the filter and carbs and not slip off like the thin stuff that comes from K&N.
