Title: Question for the Windows gods
Post by: The Buddha on July 29, 2007, 09:09:59 AM
OK wifey's Laptop, had media player 7, and an XP version that was built out of shareware in India.
Once in a while it would throw error saying it wasn't a genuine windows. She would ignore it and it worked great.
Few days ago, she left it online, and it downloaded a media player 11 and installed it. Now its not running most of the applications and is frozen with the error please provide genuine windows key or something.
Anyone have any ideas, or do I turn it into a linux machine.
Cool.
Srinath.

Try the Restore point thing... A re-install would prob be best but going to an earlier restore point may be a quick easy solution  :thumb:

all of microsofts new programs wont run on non-genuine, "free", versions. delete any new programs you have installed, go back to wmp7 and it may work fine.

Your PC should already have some dates saved before you did the install of IE, just pick one and you should be good to go  :thumb:

Done that ... but I got linux instead of ubuntu ... BTW I run Ubuntu 3.0 in my GS500 black box. it will not start without you chanting "F%^k you bill gates" atleast 3 times.
Anyway, I had the damn WMP 11 uninstalled finally. Mostly works fine now. She's noticed just some loss of functionality with it. Evidently some thumbnail array in a some or other ... yea ... wasn't working, but it wasnt a big deal.
Cool.

but when u load up Windows u have to enter the liecience key at install , then  connect to microsoft to have them check and make it certain its a real copy , and if youve had the lappy a while wouldnt you have done that when it was installed or the shop who sold it to you?

its not that hard to crack cd-keys now days, besides they can't do anything except "suggest" to you that you have been sold a bad copy :laugh:. when you run the WGA it tells you that they don't gather identifiable information. I'm running a restore cd, i don't even know what computer its from but it works  :thumb:.

I use Linux (Debian), but I need WindowsXP for my GAMES...

Ok SRINATH...  GET RID OF ANNOYING WINDOWS NAG SCREEN - HERES HOW TO DO IT.

You should install WindowsXP all over again. So Save your resumes/bike manuals to a disk and Format C:
Once installed... Change AUTOMATIC UPDATES Preferences to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install shaZam!" (Control Panel -> Automatic Updates)
Apply -> Ok.

This will ensure you get the latest security updates, but allows you to specify what not to install during the updates ... So, just make sure to leave out the WIndows Genuine Advantage update from ALL future updates! You have to be careful not to select this, it will screw you!

Once you get to the point that all udpates are installed, except the WGA one, go back into AUTOMATIC Updates and TURN OFF AUTOMATIC UPDATES...

Apply -> OK...

DONE

No NAG screens, and secure machine...

WOOHOO

Cheers,
J
