Title: Searched already, but, updating the tail on a 95
Post by: IN_DET on July 29, 2007, 08:22:49 PM
As I mentioned in a previous thread, I just picked up a low mile 95 GS500E for my GF.  We both feel the tail end really dates this bike, it simply looks older than it should since the ass is so squared off.  I searched around here and the web for info about updating it but all I found was the R1 or R6 mod, but honestly, that sucker is too wide for this bike.  It looks good from the side but from behind or above it looks out of place.  I looked around trying to find a used tail section off of an 04-07 with no luck and I couldn't determine if it would fit with the current tank or not.  I'm not interested (at least currently or until she rides it) in the entire fairing setup, I'd just like to update the rear so it looks more like something out of the current lineup.

if you use a F model you will need a tail light too, they are different.

Finally someone says what I have been screaming for years. R1/6 tail looks like sheite from front or back.
Anyway, I did a 01+ tail conversion. Just get strips of sheet metal and hammer away. You need to make 4 brackets. Literally 4. I made the grommets sit in them and put the tabs in grommets. Oh yea, rear at the latch brace is a L bracket with a welded nut underside. The front one is a O with a 1/2 section removed. Waaay in the back under the sissy bar I believe I had a cross bar with somehting or other. Forget what I did with the footpeg one.
Cool.
Srinath.

BTW,if any one is putting the larger(I think 02 and up) tank on an E model and would like brackets to hold the front of there plastics, send me a private message. You still need the rubber grommets.I do them in aluminum. As long as I can keep getting the metal cheap,I only charge $7 for both brackets plus shipping.Shipping is Usually $1.50 to $2 in the US.
My little brackets hold the front of the plastics on the first gen GS when adding the larger tank.

The 01+ tail looks too wide for the bike as well, especially with the small rear wheel......eventhough I have a 04 tail on my 97.....to match the 05 tank.

The 6 mounting points for the 01+ plastics are different, the grab handle mount is higher and the brake light bracket needs to be moddified also.

Without trying, I doubt the 01+ tail will fit around the side of the 89-00 tank.

Just wondering wouldn't it be easier to get a 01+ sub frame and have it welded to his bike?  Then just get the tank and seat?

When I did mine, I cut off the mounts from an 05 frame (non-titled) and welded them to the 97. I thought about cutting the whole sub-frame but I was concerned about getting aligned correctly unless I made a jig.

I like the 04+ tail since its a bit more round in the back and a bit more modern, but I assume I'd need the 04 tank and seat also.  Seeing as how I can't seem to find any of this for a reasonable price I don't know if I can call it an option or not.  I've got no problem with welding brackets or modifying, as long as I'm not rebuilding the entire frame or anything like that, but I want parts that fit together, no big funny gaps between the seat and tank.

From reading a ton of posts ,with mounts and tabs welded on , u can make it look like a 01+  and everything will fit , its the same frame in essence

It is not too hard to figure out the brackets. If you need pics let me know. I have posted them in previous threads in you want to search.

This time of the year part costs are high. I have less than $120 in my tail & tank.....and these were all next to new....but these were obtained in the fall/winter.
