Title: Windscreen questions
Post by: flyingmachine on July 31, 2007, 12:43:39 AM
Besides the funky look and cost, any other reason why I shouldn't get a windscreen?  I'm considering either the National Cycles F16 sport or touring.  The 30 mins of freeway getting to and from the twisties can be a pain especially after long hard day of riding.  I'm 5' 7", do you guys think the sport would be enough for wind protection if I'm slightly tucked in?  Thanks

I have the F16 sport and find it pretty good, I get a bit of wind blast just on my shoulders up and I'm around your height.

thanks bubba, if you need to, can you tuck all the way into the protection of the windscreen?

yeah i wouldn't mind a new windscreen too, wind hits my face just perfect for irritation

if i ever changed my screen it would be a dark tint stock replacement. it gets to damn hot here to not have the wind hit you in the chest  :thumb:

Just to clear up any confusion I have one of the older naked GSs.  Not hating on the wrapped GSs though, you guys are   O0 too.

Yeah you can tuck in behind it for a bit more protection.

I find that the wind blast I get just in a normal riding position isn't all that noticable.

I like the protection of a flyscreen. It's very minimal, and allows 'clean' air for the helmet to travel through.

Tucking behind a low shield is annoying to me, and it means I can't see anything in my mirrors.

I bought the National Cycle plexi III ( iirc ) - big, with lower extensions and hand protection - great for cold weather winter riding .

But puts more turbulence/ noise right on the helmet - unless you crouch down behind it ( good for rain ).

I imagine it would be good for long  freeway trips ( in fact it seems to let the bike cut thru the air more cleanly )

but I took it off last spring and haven't used it since.  Been meaning to get some sort of smaller flyscreen kind of shield ( but i hate shopping).

The F16 did look pretty good come to think of it.

I have the targa upper 1/4 faring and lower chin spoiler.I had the wind blast to the chest and helmet. It buffeted my helmet so bad sometimes that i couldn't see.My helmet would shake and vibrate so bad at 70 mph that I would have to slow to 60mph.Then I learned that the targa fairings weren't designed for stock 89 GS with factory clip ons.The previous owner modified the brackets pulling the wind screen down.I am currently modifying and adjusting new brackets.

I had the F-16 sport (Still have it around.. meant to sell it to a member here, then could never get the pics to him, and I think he lost interest). Didn't help hardly at all. It was a minor improvement at interstate speeds, but honestly, it wasn't worth the detriment to the looks, IMHO. I took it off. I'll probably try to sell it again soon. It's got a small patch of rash from my wreck, and is missing one of the adjuster brackets (It stays on fine, and doesn't move around, and you can order spares.. I just never did, cuz I'm lazy). I'll probably sell it for like $30 shipped or so, if you're interested, drop me an email, as I'll probably be banned from here in the next hour or so.

I just switched from faired to naked, and I'm shocked by how much wind the gauges deflect.  The gauges deflect wind up to about my neck level, the windscreen only bought another four inches or so.  I know, that doesn't help.

Hey chuck, try changing the angle of the flyscreen. Once you get a vacuum pocket just below your chin, you may find you _like_ the flow of clean air from the neck up.

It helps keep ya cool, and helps keep the helmet free from fog and rain (turn sideways 1/2 a second to really clear the helmet's shield in heavy rain at speed).

I noticed tucking in behind a shield really fogged my helmets shield in cold weather. Don't like that at all myself.

Mine's not the flyscreen, it's the airtech full fairing, so I can't really adjust the angle.

Anywho, eventually I figured out I don't care either way about the wind.  Maybe I will again in November, we'll see.  Or maybe in November I'll take my FZR that blows hot air from the radiator up my jacket sleeves.     But the faring makes it a real pain to do mechanical work, so I run without it now.  Maybe I'll sell it, but man it's pretty thrashed up.

It does save 3-5 MPG though.

Hi there,
I just installed a National Cycle F-15 Tour Shield windshield, which is higher and wider than the F-16 and actually provides adequate protection. I thought the F-16 is way too small.
I finally removed the silver Tracy 2000 quarter fairing I've had on my bike for about 12 years. I was wanting to try something new.
I have ridden several hundred miles with the F-15 and I like it, though I think the mounting system in a bit flimsy.
I plan on also buying a National Cycle Plexistar 2 or Plexifairing 3 for the cold winter months because they offer MUCH more coverage, including for the hands and lower body.
Swapping them off for the seasons will be no problem.
Here's the F-15Tour Shield:

Obviously this photo isn't a GS500, but it is a good example of how the windshield looks when it is mounted.
I'll try to take a photo of my bike and post it soon.

I hope this helps.
Good luck,
Todd

Good plan.   :thumb:

I like a smaller shield like the Spitfire or NC Deflector Screen thru the summer and fall and then a larger Plexi 2 type for the winter and thru the spring rains here in NE Ohio.  I leave the Plexi 2 fittings on and changing back and forth is quick and easy.

I have the naked GS (07 model)..is there something smaller than the one pictured...like the one that fits on a Buell Blast or Ducati for example?
