I have a 1994 gs500. I have saw some sharp bike on here that have went through some tail section work. I am interested in removing the rear footpegs and the bracket that holds them and the exhaust and i want to put the exhaust above the wheel . Does anybody have any suggestions?
the wiki site has a bunch of info and great picures on that, plus pipe info and more. i just got woodcraft rearsets from one of the other members here and i love them. much better than the old stamped ones.

What tail to use is a personal choice. I am making a solo race tail based on the 01+ stock bodywork & seat blended with the seat pan from JamesG 89-00 race tail.
For my undertail exhaust....I used a Duc 999 midpipe (996 will work the same), a stock header, custom flange for a shortened c/f Micron can, add some short pieces of tubing with some welding and I ended up with a really good looking exhaust. Had to cut the subframe for clearance. Of course the rear peg brackets are gone. Also the inner fender had to go. Relocated the electricals from the right side to in front of the battery. Still need to clean and paint the header. It has a sweet mellow sound.
I looked at using a stock undertail can from another bike but I already had the Micron can. With my set-up, there is about 4.5" of clearance for rear wheel travel. I could have modded the subframe to race the exhaust more but I will not have a problem due the stiff spring on the Fox TC shock. I would find a 4" diameter can if I was doing another.

Heating the rear tire (and your buns) on a hot day isn't a *good* thing IMHO. It might look sharp, but it sucks from an engineering standpoint unless it's very well insulated.

Just because a certain Italian manufacturer of expensive bikes and/or cars does it doesn't make it good practice, just stylish and slightly cool.

Having an underseat exhaust is common place these days, threr'd have to be over a dozen bikes with them these days.
I know that D-Day has an undertail on his gs. I'm not sure if he gets on much anymore, but look in the gallery for his bike.

I just mentioned Ducati...there are plenty other European and Japanese manufacturers doing this. True it is stylish, but if it was a safety concern then I do not think that they would be making them.
The muffler can itself does not create enough heat to cause a problem unless it is within 1-2" of something damagable, like plastic. The exhaust pipe is another story. The only time I have heard of a problem with this is on the RC51 rear cylinder down pipe where it run parallel with the shock. With the temp high since it just left the motor, it can heat up the shock causing it to fade. Exhaust pipe wrap can lower the shock temp dramatically.
I figured out what Im going to do. Im going to cut the pipes off to make an open exhaust(drag pipes) I just need to figure out what size of main jets to use.
Start with 150 mains and go from there. Better have a lunch box or pods to provide enough air. Lack of back pressure will be the problem for low end power.
