Ok I got to replace my fork seals on my dd k6. Only lasted 5k miles. Well my roads suck out here. The dealer wants $450 + parts so im gonna do it my self. I did some searching, I work at ace hardware so I can make the special tool for free. What I want to know is if can use fork seals for 02 E on my 06 F. Im thinking I can from what I found. I would get OEM but Im short on cash and can't be with out my bike atm. So Im gonna get some after market seals. If they dont last more than a cpl thousand miles oh well hopefuly I can aford better ones then. :) Also can I go with out changing the dust seals? Or should I do both while im at it? Would not changing the dust seals lead to aother leak? Thanks for the help. Late
If you are getting a couple thousand out of them, there is something wrong with the fork leg.Either it's pitted, the leg is deformed,or debris is getting between the dust seal and the fork seal. You are replacing both seals on both forks.Make sure you clean them very good. Also dip the seals in oil before you install them. Then whip them down when you have the fork together.Make sure you use pipe or a seal driver.Dgyver and I recently rebuilt a set of Katana forks where someone used a hammer and screw driver to install the seals. They where dripping oil setting still.I did my GS forks back in May and I have over 2000 miles with no problems. If your springs are to soft, you bottom out frequently, blowing oil past the seals. That's what was happening to mine.Seals should last the life of your bike if they're taken care of.
yea it sounds like your tubes are bad. i wouldnt recomend reusing your dust covers.. If you are going to redo your seals then you need to replace everything. Or else it wont be worth it. Its like changing your brakes out but only changning half the pads on one side and half the pads on the other.
Ya im gonna replace the dust seals as well. My fork legs should be fine I just been ridding the snot out of it. Plus for like 2 months I had to drive my g/f back and forth to work beacuse her car broke down. Im almost to big for it as it is. I also ride on dirt and crapy paved roads. So I think I just lew the seals from use. Also I've been searching about the fork tool. I read where he 04+ are a little differnt to where the tool won't work. If thats the case what will? Thanks for your help guys. Also on bikebandit.com do the oem seal come as a set of 2 or are they $25 ea. I tried e-mailing them but it didn't seem to work. Thx
the seals should come as a set of two. If you want i have an extra couple of sets i wouldnt mind getting rid of...just pm me. Also one thing to think of...if you are riding on dirt rodes im just you might get alot of stones kicked up in front of you...Check you fork tubes before you start replacing the seals. Raise the front end up off the ground so they can fully extend.. then inspect the travel area for any SMALL nicks or dings in the chrome. The smalled ding in the travel are will tear the seal all to hell. Everytime it goes up and down it tears a small piece out of it. if they are chipped then you need to get new/used forks or else the problem will still be there a month later.
