I read on Pablo's page that 'any slip-on' can be used as long as it's a slip-on and not a 'bolt-on'.... well I see how that can be semi-true .. but different slip-on's probably have different diameter openings... has anyone experimented with this? I'd like maybe a Yosh, D&D or Devil slip-on. I'm overhauling my bike from the ground up, exciting things to come, and one of the things I'm interested in is the exhaust. Suggestions, or should I just buy a Cobra?
I would assume you could use any can you wanted. you'd just have to do some fabricating to enlarge the exhaust at the point where it meants up with the silencer.
Thats exactly right. It was Srinath that gave the "any can will do" info so he'll have to comment but what I understood him to say way back when was that you can take any can and mate it to the stock exhaust pipe. Cut old can off and weld new can on as you need to-whether that means fabricating a wider transition mid-pipe or just welding it on as best you can. I'd look for something with the same or similar size inlet (to muffler) pipe size: cbr600f2/f3 supposedly had same or similar. Stock is 1.75" diameter and cbr is that or maybe 2". I got that info from Yosh when I was sorting that out for myself. I never did it though.
The various end cans also vary in how restrictive they are so you'll have to mess around by trial and error on jetting: some may need it, some may not but will run better if you do.
I basiaclly slip fit a intermediate pipe between the can and the stock header. Take a pipe piece that fits on the outside of the header and flare it to fit inside the can. Then weld it all up. I also cut the can off with a dremel tool just as it flared off from the header. That leaves the weld still in place making it easire for a direct fit cos its considerably larger. You could also if you wanted cut the flared part where its outside dia is going to be the same as the inside dia of the can you want to use. Again no need for a intermediate pipe.
