So yesterday I was riding from my morning job to the next one and Im heading up the 15 in San Diego towards Mira mesa blvd. Just riding along at about 75 in the fast lane when I get near Carroll Canyon road exit and I feel my bike start to loose power. I immediately start to change lanes to try to get to the edge of the freeway everything looks clear behind me and the bike is still running, but feels like its about to die. As im making my last lane change over to the lane before the shoulder I check my right side then the rear view mirror I am down to about 45 miles per hour now and BAM the bike backfires really loud and shuts off, power on the bike goes off and then comes the next bam a f%$king white SUV like a tahoe or something clips me from the left as im changing lanes.
the bike and I go skidding off into the dirt, i never hit the pavement I just went into the dirt off the side off the freeway which was pretty soft, I stood up after rolling a bit and did a quick body check, everything was fine at least it felt find all my limbs were there, the bike was farther down in the bushes and there is no white SUV to be found. While mumbling several very vulgar sentences and trying to keep my self from shaking i walk over to the bike covered in dirt, pick it up and I lost a rear view mirror headlight mount is broken scratched all down the side tank now has dents in it. I took my helmet off and spit some of the dirt out of my mouth kicked the bike and walked back up the edge of the highway to see if the SUV was there, of course it wasn't so I just flipped of a few random cars on the freeway walked back down to the bike and started to drag it up the hill. As I get it to the top, a brown gmc truck pulls over and a guy in his 50's comes out to see If im alright. He tells me that he just saw me standing on the side of the freeway covered in dirt, glances over at the bike and asks if I need a ride to the hospital. I tell him that im alright, don't want to go to the hospital and he says that we can put the bike in the back of his truck if i want. First I try to start it, POS the lights don't even come on. I take the seat off and check the fuse its fine of course we try to put it in the back of the truck but me in my state of shock and this guy could not lift it. So i push it up the on ramp and put it at a carls junior.
later to go back and pick it up. my ribs hurt along with the rest of my body feels like I got hit by a car o wait i did. Went to the hospital last night did the whole police report thing, hope they find the guy, have 2 broken ribs.
the good thing is im here talking to you guys and as the person said at the hospital, you should be glad you were wearing gear
Dang man, sorry to hear about the hit-n-run, but glad to hear you are in one piece and pretty much healthy. If you want any help, let me know, I'd be more than happy to help a brudda out.
alright man i may need it right now i have no clue why it shut off
Damn sorry to hear about your bike but glad you are relatively ok, good luck with the police report and the SUV, hope someone comes forward. Was the reason why the bike shut down was fuel not getting enough in the carbs, then the restiriction cleared hence the backfire??? I dont know, just throwing it out there. Seems like dirty carbs sputter and backfire. Like I said I dont know. Up here we have a gnarley fire and I have been trying to keep crap out of my air box but it seems almost futile with all the ash. Anyway glad you made it out of that walking, take it easy.
that could explain why it backfired but why did it just run out of power, the battery checks out

So was the Tahoe changing lanes? Or was it behind you in your lane and they just didn't slow down enough?
Did you know about the petcock's issues at speed ?
Glad to hear you're doing well considering.
BTW - You're a tough sob to survive a suv and a dust roll on the interstate in cali.
Heal well and heal fast.
Glad you're ok. Check for a broken ground. Exact same thing happened to me last year, but fortunately I was able to merge over to the shoulder w/o getting run over. A ground wire connecting to the negative terminal on my battery had broken. I wired it back up and everything was A-okay
I second the ground check by MOTF. A few years back mine started to back fire and seem to run on one cylinder. If I lightly applied the front brake, enough to activate the brake light, it would run much better. The brake light switch was acting as the ground for the system. Later found the neg terminal lead to the battery corroded very badly inside the insulation on the bottom near the battery.
man that sucks. do you think you will still be able to make the ride on the 19th?
if i can have it fixed ill come on the ride.
I just went down and picked up new rims and a front shock ( stock, dont have time right now to do shaZam!) the frame is strait. the bike makes some wierd noises when you try to start it. the grounds are good but the 3 lines comming from the stator have somehow melted apart, that whole wire connector under the seat is gone/melted
Yikes! Glad you're ok...hope you're feeling better today! :thumb:
