Title: Stalling and Shifting Help
Post by: max_boost on August 10, 2007, 10:04:19 AM
A friend of mine recently bought a 1982 Yamaha SR250.  The bike starts right up and runs fine while riding but it almost always stalls when coming to a stop (once the clutch is disengaged).  Someone told me that her chain is too tight and that is causing the bike to stall.  Is that possible?  What else could be causing this?

Also, when the engine is running it's almost impossible to get into neutral (I've only been able to get it once) but when the engine is off it goes without any trouble.  Any ideas what's wrong?

I know it's not a GS but you guys seem to know motorcycles pretty well and I didn't know where else to ask.

Thanks

Sounds like the clutch is sticking together. If it's a wet clutch I'd try changing the oil to a motorcycle specific oil. Also try adjusting the clutch and cable.I am unsure how to do this on the bike you're asking about. If it has a lot of miles maybe time for new clutch.Hope this helps.

make sure it's got wet clutch compatible oil

Thanks for the replies.  The bike has less than 5,000 miles.  I found an online repair manual so I'll try to find out whether it's a wet or dry clutch.
