Title: starting, before & after jetting
Post by: dmp221 on August 05, 2003, 07:46:49 AM
I'm wondering if this is normal.  Before jetting, to start the bike, I would choke it and hit the button.  The engine would immediately fire and run strong, quickly racing up to 2500-3000 rpm until I esed off the choke.  Then there was a fairly long warm up period, and the bike would stumble and cough til she warmed up all the way.

After jetting (and Cobra f1-R slip-on) I start her the same way but do NOT get that immediate explosion, and racing engine...it starts, but lopes along at about 1000-1100 rpm and after about 10-15 sec. runs better when I cut the choke.  However, I now have NO stumbling or hesitation even with a very short warm up.  Idle after warm-up is around 1300-1500.

Is this new starting pattern a normal result of jetting?

It might be a little rich.  Try going in on the screws a little.

I managed to over richen my Virago. It starts only with 1/2 to 3/4 choke. Full choke and it sorta sputters. I'd try 1/2 choke basically. Also what jeff said. And dont take off the choke in 15 seconds even if the bike will hold idle. This is a case of too much of a good thing. If the bike warms up in 3-5 mins its too long. If the bike warms up in 15 seconds that's too short. Get it to where it will run stable at 1 min or so...the engine needs that little bit of heat and that time will get it to where its lubed right.
Cool.
Srinath.
