Title: A few GS500F track pics
Post by: Chris18 on August 10, 2007, 01:19:59 PM
Hello all :)

Was on another trackday, on monday, and finally got some good pics of me on my bike.
I set a best time of 1,16,1, arounbd a track where superbikes on slicks struggle to do 1.04's, it's not so bad I rekon.

Well here are a few, any criticism is welcome

Hey, that's my bike too (black and red).  So I can push it over that far? =-) lol.  Awesome.  I'm new, still learning about this leaning way over stuff.

Dan
Yeah, with propper tires you can :p
I use Pilot Powers front and rear 120 front and 150 rear, awsome tires, and trust me you can cary more corner speed then any other on the track, I overtook R6's and CBR1000RR's in the hairpin :lol

According to my Veypor speedo, it logged a fastest speed of 161 km/h.
Just to compare, I was there with a bloke on a SV1000, and he was hitting 205 km/h, and I was still 1 second a lap faster than him :lol

AWESOME pics! I hope to eventually get to the point where I can take my GS out to a track. Either way, your pictures look great! Is there any way to remove the watermark from Soborg or w/e so maybe we can use it as a background? Thanks!

Looks like you're quite comfortable. Would you mind listing your gear's makers ?

I noticed you are riding with no clutch nor brake contact. Is this just for on the track ?

I only ask because I have the habit of always two fingering the clutch and brake. It seems more comfortable, and in the few E-stops I've needed to make, my hands and feet were already in place. Maybe it shaves 1/10th of a second off the application of brakes.

Now I also wonder how many other folks drape over the controls as opposed to only gripping the bars ?

Very nice shots you got there. Whoever was snapping did a good job. I'd like to know what they were shooting with. If _I_ had shots that nice two or three would be on the wall.

Enjoy the fun !

Nice pics....but....

You need to move off the seat and hang off the bike more. In the 2nd pic, the bike is leaning too far with you still sitting up high. Your head should be looking through where the mirrors normally are.

It is great to compair times with the bigger bikes and see that a lot are not that much faster. All the fun is in the turns, any idiot can go fast in a straight line.

Yeah I know mate, but that was coming out of a corner and going onto the straight, that's why I was sitting up so much, normally I hang off alot more, but you do have a point, I was practicing that quite alot  :)

But your right none the less mate I need to hang off more than I do, I'm alsways open for constructive criticism :D

Those are SV650 clip-ons, it has an SV650 front end, which also explains the dual front discs :p ;)

If those are indeed SV-650 clip ons and front end, how easy was it to do the swap? I'm thinking about doing a front end swap and I was under the impression that only the Katana was swappable. What year was the front end off of if so? I need info!!! =P Anyway, awesome pics!

Well it wasn't easy, but most of the parts fit straight over, although you will need to press the GS "steering stem" (I think it's called) into the SV tripple trees.

I did the swap with a mate of mine and we used his 1999 SV650 front end, but we had to weld something onto the steering stem because something didn't quite fit (it's over a year ago since we did it, so I don't really remember the details  )

Don't believe me then here are more pics :p

Oh, I believe you! I was just curious about the specifics. Is your bike exclusively a track bike or do you use it on the street? I am looking to do a "track ready but street ridable" version. I don't know of many track days out in AZ, but CA has a bunch and it gives me a reason to visit my brother in San Diego. And what's that digital gauge?

Most any f/e can be made to fit. Kat f/e's are just relatively cheap and common, which is their lure. One note about swapping stems, aluminum stems are typically a little bigger so pressing in a steel GS stem may require a shim or knurling. From the GSXR swaps I have done, there is a about 0.5mm difference in stem diameters.

I ride it on the street all the time, it's more or less my daily transport :) And trust me if your going on a track then get the SV forks, because they are stiffer than the Katana's, and that will help your laptimes alot more. ;)

The gauge is a Veypor VR2, one of the best mods you can make on a GS I rekon  :icon_lol:

....

How are they stiffer?    They are both 41mm.

Since springs need to be changed according to the riders weight, that has nothing to do with it.

Looking Good!!

Nothing beats a good day at the track!  :thumb:

Did you modify the engine in any way? Or is a stock engine fast enough?

sorry i got to the talk late.  do you have the stock rim on the rear, and if so, have any problems with the 150mm tire on the street?  I'm thinking about upgrading and just wanted an opinion.  Not trying to restart the entire tire size/type debate, just wanting to hear what the man thinks.  The bike looks great too, exact color of my 05.  Love it, wish i was talented enough to do some of the mods you have.

No problems at all, it can be a Buddha Loves You to fit the tire on the original rim, but it will fit, no problem.
The reason why I put a bigger tire on it was simply because 150 is the smallest size they make propper sport tires in, I didn't do it for visual purpose. :)

And a set of Pilot Powers is ALOT ALOT better than the standard crap they fit those bikes with.

The engine itself it completly stock, aside from a BSM Vampire exhaust system, K&N filter and a Jet-kit.

THe big advantage the GS has over most other bikes is that it's just so easy to flick around, and it's very good at carying alot faster corner speed than other bikes.
But the engine needs about 50 more HP on the straights to keep up with others  but the advantage of low HP , is that it's almost impossible to overwhelm the tires grip, so highsiding is almost impossible on a GS.

I love the GS on the track, I just need to move the footrests back because they hit the ground in almost every turn.

Looks like alot of fun, but you definitely need some rearsets cuz you looked all cramped up in the legs relative to the rest of your body.

Anyways, you need to move your body a bit more, and when you exit a corner you should still be leaned over on the bike and be loading the outside of the peg. You basically try to get the bike more upright as you get on the gas(which requires you to actually move off more) while not upsetting the bike. Watch the WSBK riders and you will see what I am talking about, as they come out they get hard on the gas while keeping th ebike mroe upright, then as t hey get moving you see them center themselves back on the bike.

Like this(shameless plug of myself riding someone elses SV650)
