Well I just bought a 2001 GS500 and it ran fine until one morning I went to start it up. It would turn over and idle somewhat strong. Then it started to stall out repeatedly. After using the choke it revved up nicely to about 5k. Then as I began to lower the choke and roll on the throttle it died. I kept trying and realized that it's running somewhat strong but dies out whenever I touch the throttle. It also dies if I try to put it into 1st gear.
The battery is charged and the sparks aren't fouled, it's also got a full tank of 89 octane gas.
I bought the Haynes Maintainence book so I'm ready to wrench. I'm just not sure where to start. Any thoughts.
Has it been sitting for more than a week?
At what RPM does it idle at when warm (ideally after a 10 minute ride)?
Clutch safety switch working properly?
Sidestand up, and the sidestand switch working?
Clutch cable condition? And, is the slack adjusted properly?
It was running one night and then one day later I couldn't ride it. It usually idles around 2k after riding for some time. I still need to pull in the clutch to start her up. It was stalling with both the sidestand down and up. As for the clutch cable's condition I'm not sure. I'm very new to motorcycles.
One thing: do not roll on throttle while the choke is on; use one or the other; if the bike can't run on one, it's either not warm enough or something's wrong. It wont hurt it, but it's just not a good idea.
Ok, it's not the clutch switch otherwise you wouldn't be able to start it at all.
It's not the sidestand switch.
Idle should be set to ~1300 rpm when warm, but first we need to get your bike running properly to do so.
Is your airfilter good?
Are your carbs seated properly in their boots?
Did a spider build a nest in your floatbowl vent tube, or is it blocked or clogged? The open end is (or should be) between the airbox and battery box.

Edit: is your vacuum tube connected at both ends? (Inside left carb to frame-mounted petcock)
I recently bought the Haynes Manual and it should be coming by the end of the week. Until then are there how-to's on the website? Should I check each and then retry starting her?
turn the petcock to PRI and try it.if it works, either the petcock is bad or the vacumme line is off.
try this if you believe it to be the petcock. http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=19363.0
