I have a what may seem like a dumb question but here I go
when turning a corner I approach by pulling in the clutch and down shift into second and once Im in far enough into the turn I start to slowly let go the clutch and give it gas. now is that a correct method or do down shift into the turn and release the clutch before the turn and then start giving it gas approaching the turn? they didnt really review these senerios at the class.
your making a mistake.. NEVER bring sudden power change into a turn.. always do it before you enter the turn. Meaning downshift and brake before you enter the turn.. the only thing you need to do when you enter a turn is the throttle, look and lean.
You can do shifting in a turn in some cases but it can be dangerous if you dont know how to do it smoothly. I know ppl who have dumped bikes while shifing in a turn. That change in rpms can make you loose traction. Also never hit the brake in a turn. If you have to apply slowly and straighten up and then apply full force.
Hope this helps.
so to get this straight
down shift and release the clutch before even entering the turn, and while into the turn just give it gas
yes..
do all the slowing down and shifing of gears before you enter turn. Gas is to be constant but can be varied depending on road conditions and turn conditions..
I think you havent taken the safety course.. please take it .. you will learn more there than asking us for info. www.msf-usa.org (if you live in the US) if you live else where check your motorcycle dealers for where you can get rider training.
Brake and shift before you start your turn. Once you initiate your turn roll on the gas smoothly and cinsistently. This helps stabilize the suspension. I suggest you read Twist of the Wrist II by Keith Code for more important info like this. Excellent read. And yeah, take MSF if you haven't-its worth it.
You should also watch MOTOGP - whats that saying "A picture is worth a thousand words?" no matter how Keith Code writes it, watching Rossi or Bayliss - the two best in braking - set up for a corner is priceless.
The correct way to ride a bike, and it come with time and experience, is to brake, select the right gear and THEN take the corner. Never ever, ever, coast with your clutch in, or let your clutch out while your leaned over :nono: . If you want to know why, ride at about 15 miles an hour in second, down shift to first and apply the front and rear brake while pulling sharpishly into the curb (all in one motion). Your ass end will step out, but not enough to throw you since your speed is low. Now try that at 40 miles an hour and see what happens! :o
It all just takes time, and you get to know the best and often the fastest way to corner.
