Title: Riding Gear
Post by: JasonB on August 05, 2003, 07:39:22 PM
Alright I have an JR Atomic jacket but its too small in the sleeves and not waterproof. I need a jacket that has long sleeves and is waterproof. Zip out liner so I can wear it in the hot and cold and of course vents. I am thin so it has to be small in the chest and adjustable waist. Any ideas?

Anyone know of full guantlet style gloves with padded or gel palms?

I'd go to the nearest bike shop and try on every jacket to see what fits the best.
When I was looking for a jacket (I know is a pain in the ass) i would try one on, if the initial fit was ok then i'd go and sit on a bike (hopefully they have a GS) to make sure that the jacket stay in place while in your riding position.
Hopefully this helps.

Jason,

How much do you want to spend? Do you want just a jacket that's waterproof or a whole suit? A whole suit from Aerostich, Roadcrafter or Tourmaster will run you about $1,200. A jacket? Hmm, don't know of any right off the top of my head. I use a TourMaster two-piece rainsuit over my leather jacket & jeans. Or just the rainjacket over the leather jacket, depending on the cicumstances. I hope this helps. I, too, am skinny (125lbs.). The best jacket I owned was a Hein Gericke V-pilot, with the removable liner, long zipper vents in a size 30. And when it rained I put on the TourMaster rainsuit.

I have pants that are water proof so I dont need the whole suit because other times I just wear jeans and a jacket to ride.

Bird that was my main problem fit of the jacket in the store vs the bike. It was fine in the store (small JR atomic) but when I got on the bike the sleeves rode up and even with gauntlet style gloves there would be a gap when I opened the arm vents. And I couldnt get the wrist enclosure tight enough when I didnt wear a long sleeve shirt. And now after getting caught in some drizzle rain and a few downpours I want something that will keep the water off me. Ruinsuit wont cut it cause after a while of no rain I'll leave it at home or something.

I know you said that a rainsuit was out, but have you considered Frogg Toggs?  If you bought the jacket only you could roll it up small - it weighs about half a pound - and keep it in your tank bag all the time.

Waterproof, windproof, and lightweight.  Just don't touch it to a hot exhaust pipe!

For last year's trip to Canada I bought the Frogg Toggs "Pro Angler" suit.  The jacket is the same as in the original Pro Action suit, but the pants are basically bib overalls and have a Velcro closure at the bottom rather than elastic.  I figured I could use the extra "windproof-ness" on my chest area, although I probably needn't have bothered.  They come in several colors, but I went with the dorky white / light gray for visibility:

Gloves: Are you lookin for long gauntlet, waterproof/resistant winter gloves? Or, a pair of ricky roadracer lookalike/wannabe long gauntlet gloves that are waterproof? Currently I can only suggest Tourmaster winter gloves, with the chamois on the fingers for wiping off your faceshield; they have the GoreTex and Thinsulate liners.

The showers around here last for about 15 minutes at most when going down the road, well I should say downpours not the showers, its the light drizzle that seems to go on for miles. So by the time I got stopped and got it out etc I would be soaked already and kinda defeats it. I dont go out in the rain purposely I just get caught in downpours from time to time. And you cant see that it will rain until its already started.

Gloves I have some Joe Rocket Highside gloves that I really like but wish they had gel in the palm. I have another set of Olympia gloves that are gel palmed but real short. I want to have the gloves cover my jacket otherwise it will just soak down into the glove or up my sleeve if/when it rains and when its cool out at night the cold air goes right up the sleeve. Also the Olympia ones are made wrong all the seams are sewed t the inside so the extra leather touches your finger tips when you ride and its annoying and next size up doesnt feel right.
