Title: Latest Creation (w/pics)
Post by: skoebl on August 19, 2007, 03:15:05 PM
Here's my latest creation. It's pretty simple, but was a good 2 solid days of work. It conforms to the FTC guidelines defining jewelry that is "hand-made" too.
It's entirely hand made. I poured the white and yellow gold ingots and shaped them myself. The only mechanical tool we are allowed to use is a flex-shaft (like a dremel). The diamond is of horrible quality, but we didn't have much control over that since it was for a customer and she supplied it.
Stats: 3 carat J-L I1 diamond half-channel-set in an 18.7 gram two-tone (yellow and white gold) ring.

Hope ya like it!  :thumb:

Yeah we use foredom flexshafts. I love flexshafts...greatest. tool. ever.  Would much rather have one at home instead of a dremel lol.
Hurry up and finish so you can post up those pics!!

There are a few inclusions that severely effect its brilliance, but you're right; it's not THAT bad

imo if it werent the size of the diamond, teh " inclusions and/or issues with it, would not be all that noticeable :thumb:

That is very true. Actually the way they grade large carat diamonds is based on how they would look if they were 1 carat. So a 15 carat diamond with really visible inclusions might be a VS1, whereas a 1 carat with inclusions that are just as noticeable would be an I3 or thereabouts.

I'm surprised also that no one has asked how much that puppy costs?! :)

Nice work btw.

Cheers,

The yellow gold section is made of old rings the customer brought in; along with the diamond. We supplied the white gold. The final price was $1150; which really isn't much for the huuge look that ring exhibits.

i had a customer bring in 4 2mm gold bands, wanting to make 1 ring out of, which i did.took the 4 soldered together, filled in teh grooves and then rounded teh surface, so it looked like a large version of teh aforementioned bands :thumb:

Piece looks nice - not my style, but the craftsmanship is impressive.

Little threadjack here :)  I have a plat ring with 6 bands made of pairs of diamonds (if that makes any sense).  The ring was perfectly fitted while I wore it in the store before buying it - about an hour while my (now) wife was trying on bands for her.  Get to our honeymoon and it almost falls off because my hand was wet.

Long story short, I now have 2 ugly dots on the back of the ring so it's "fitted".  The dots are really cylinders instead of mounds so they have edges that are rather uncomfortable.

How would either of you (skoebl and yamahonkatoomanyletters :icon_mrgreen:) handle something like this?  Or should I just deal with it?  It's been about 15 months and I'm constantly playing with it to move where the dots press in against my finger.  Thoughts?

/jack

So in order to 'fit' it they attached two cylinders to it? Man people do some strange stuff to jewelry.
If you can snag a few pics and post 'em up I would be able to give you a good idea of what needs to be done.

Alright...well I can at least explain why they did it that way. If they had done a typical cut sizing (they really should have just ordered the right size from the manufacturer...unless it was a trade-in or something) it would have messed up the pattern by changing the length of one of the bands. It would also have the possibility of loosening the diamonds by changing the shape of their seat.

As far as I know, the only thing that would make it fit properly would be a cut sizing. If done properly, it wouldn't loosen any of the stones and it would fit fine.

Help any?  :dunno_white:

Well - it fit when I bought it - my hands were never wet at that time though.  It's only when they're wet that it's really loose.

So when I brought it in, they said they could exchange it for a new one, but we didn't like that idea because it would be a different ring (I know - stupid) and it would have taken like 3+ months.

So they put the beads on the back.  I was hoping they'd be able to do something that was a little smoother - so that they didn't catch on my finger all the time and cause pain at times.  Apparently, "there's no other way to do it" - even cut sizing would not work because it would not maintain the pressure on the stones that hold them in.  At least that's what I was told - though it sounded like they just didn't want to do it (Bailey Banks & Biddle if it makes a difference)

Is there any way to make the beads in to mounds?  Or at least something that won't catch?

Most definitely. The beads could be filed down a bit, and have metal added to either side of them, then made smooth.

Kinda like this...

Not the best picture....but you get the idea. Basically make the ring a bit thicker overall in the lower areas. Should be a LOT more comfortable.

Yeah - that's what I had in mind.  Maybe I can go back and convince them to redo it.

Thanks  :thumb:

the ring bands wrap around the side and scratch the ring though - and really are less comfortable than this :)  at least the one they tried to give me.
