Title: MOTOR IS OUT!!!!!
Post by: jbien on August 20, 2007, 05:14:01 PM
Well I finally got the motor dropped. Now what to do??? LOL. I think my motor may be fried, when looking at one of the pistons I noticed it was not attached to the rod  thats not good. So now I guess ill take it to a bike shop and see what they say, since I dont know anything about motors, well besides knowing that my pistion is gone. Here are some pics. of the drop. (http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff164/jbien16/0820071717a.jpg) Thats my piston its shot to shaZam!.

Good lord :o :o  You might want to inspect your valve train closely, it is quite possible you had some contact between piston and valve at some point with that severity of damage.  Though, honestly,  I can't imagine any way that 'you' personally could have been responsible for that kind of damage.  Looks to me to be crappy workmanship/manufacturing.

GS doesn't like to be revved past 11,000 rpm for long periods of time I guess .... :icon_razz:

Seriously now, my condolences ,how exactly did this happen?

Looks like lack of oil.

Lack of oil is my guess to, my oil light came on one day and then went off. Now keep in mind that I dont check my oil, which I will start doing in the futre especially as hard as i run my bike. But i think my oil light went out, and I thought everything was cool, then all a sudden I was on the highway, and I here a lound knocking sound, dang it. I just hope that my crank and the bottom portion is ok, im not to sure whats going to happen. I'll be taking it to my local bike shop, the guy seems pretty cool, and ill see what he can tell me. I might need a new engine like i have been saying though. I really want to fix up a motor before i put it back, oh wait i might pay someone to put it back in, cause hell if i know how to put everything back. Taking it out was pretty easy, putting it back hmmmmmmmmmmm not to sure about lol.

Suzuki should put a warning sticker on the bike engine....CHECK OIL FREQUENTLY.  I almost ran out too but i shut it down with about a quart in it.... I did not have the oil light come on.  She jus ran kinda sluggish and I knew something was wrong.  That was after about 500km on a very hot day.

Well its my fault really, I ride my bike so hard, I should be checking it every day. I just hope my motor is not complete crap, I dont want to have to buy a whole new motor. I want to get this fixed so i can upgrade to a bigger bike.

Complete overhaul job ,engine needs to be taken apart to check how the bottom end survived
and after a disaster like this you're not going to second guess  what needs to be replaced

aye THAT SIR is severe damage, i wouldnt be surprised if teh cylinder walls were scored to shaZam!, ( considering as you are missing the BOTTOM HALF of your psiton) if your cylinder walls arent scored, hell man, youre buyin my farkin lottery tickets. ( moving further down the drivetrain) upper end of connecting rod, LOWER end of connecting rod, CRANK, bearings, man at a suz shup might as well buy a new bike. errm engine, pm me, man i need that shattered piston ive got a few buds who do not at all check or maintain their machines, basically far less than you did. i need an example, hell ill pay you something for it, lemme know. seriously tho start scouting for a new or slightly used engine, odds are will be cheaper :o

Minimum you will need new crank bearings, rod bearing, counter balance bearings, pistons and rings. Along with an over bore of the sleeves for the new pistons, if the sleeves are even still good.

Depending on how bad the damage...may neeed a new crank, rods and counter balance. If the rods got too hot they will have turned blue from the heat. There may be cam and valve train damage as well.

The motor in my 97 suffered this fate earlier with a previous owner. It now has a GS450 crank and rods. Runs like a champ now.

I think shopping for a new motor (used) engine is your best bet.  The parts alone are going to run you more than a decent replacement, not to mention the labor.  Assuming you do the rebuild yourself (which isn't that hard) you'll still pay a shop to resleeve that cylinder if it's even possible.  Then you'll have to source oversize pistons and rings, inspect and mic out the crank, etc.  God only knows what shape the head is in too but with that much metal flying around it can't be too good.  Sorry this happened, keep an eye on the oil in the future ;-)
