Can you describe any more of the symptoms?

Why is this a sticky?

Mine does the same thing, I looked at all the post regarding this and I have found it somewhat common. Last thing I read was a suggestion that it was a reed valve and not a big deal to worry about. Funny cause it is irratating as heck sometimes and othertimes I dont even hear it. Probably the older I get the less I'll hear it. I would like to know the final verdict, that said I believe it to be a reed vavle that sounds like a jingling set of keys. Good post thanks.

Oops. I split this post off from another thread that was a sticky, and it must have automatically become a sticky. Thanks for pointing it out!

The tank is known to vibrate against the frame, usually around 4-6k. This is sometimes a result when missing the front rubber.

Reed valves are found on two strokers.....

Toyopete make sure it isn't the infamous camshaft end play noise , it sounds more like metal knocking ,harmless but annoying...

many posts on this subject on the forum

Oh so those are reed valves, hummm well the jingling keys phenomina must be something else, funny how there are so many posts on this yet nothing conclusive. Thanks Affschnozel glads it is hopefully harmless.

its not that, I hear it stationary as well, its more of a squeeking sound, I hear it best when I put my ear close to the monoschock,...sounds  like a hinge that needs oiling,..

I hear it best close to the mono schock, behind the engine a squeeking sound like something needs to be lubricated, very odd,..if I pull the clutch lever it still the same.

Man, this is a hot thread! And sticky too!

The 'almost like a chain with a few keys dangling' noise is just that. Something is loose, or the mess in the jug is noisy. Go on and enjoy your noisy ride. Just check your bolts weekly.

DOn't want bits falling off like those HD guys ;)

few keys dangling' noise

For me it was just that -- my metal keychain rattling against the bar.  I was in a panic until I figured it out!

I have the same exact noise on my 2006 w 10K miles. I spent hours trying to track it down, but I could not locate the source.  I have (as have many) posted about this before. Unfortunately, no one seems to have a definitive answer. Anyway, It doesn't seem to be causing any problems, the bike runs great!   :thumb:

It's difficult to exactly diagnose these kinds of things over the net without actually hearing the sound in question ,
as mentioned , there is the camshaft end play that produces a metallic clicking at idle from cam going sideways back and forth ,
solution is to replace the camshaft shim to a thicker one, IIRC there was a recall to cure this symptom by Suzuki themselves.
The end play itself is totaly harmless and has to do with tolerances of the air cooled design

ringing sound FOUND IT !

I turned of the motor, en while I was stepping/walking with it it made the same squeeking sound, as I heard it close to the monoshock it seems to come from one of the hinges that is conected with the monoshock movement, so I sprayed some gun oil  ( no specifick caliber ) on them witch reduced it for 80 %
unfortunate dont know exactly wich one is squeeking.

More Ringing sound found!!
funny thing happend,. the squeek after lubrication dind't go away fully,....but, as soon as I pushed the centerstand down it was gone,...after ispection of the centerstand I came to the conclusion the rubber on wich the centerstand is resting on the exhaust frame was missing! put on a rubber ring and GONE was the squeeking sound ( I almost missed it during driving )

I'll check when I get home the stand, but I am pretty sure everything is there. Funny I rode this weekend and didnt hear it at all. It is like an episode of the twilight zone.  I have gun oil but never thought of using it on the motorcycle, good idea CnDnmax.

I thought the shaded area was there to separate the quote...so you don't mix up the quote and reply.

I too have a strange ringing/metallic rattling noise around 4000-6000 rpm's... :cookoo:
I thought it was my keychain too, I tried to hold the keys firm with my hands but to no avail.... :dunno_white:
Seems like it's located near the instruments/right grip zone, yet I can't see/hear anything loose or vibrating. :dunno_white: :dunno_white: :dunno_white:

4000-6000 rpm is when the fuel tank vibrates?

idk if this has been mentioned, but the glass in my mirrors vibrates at certain rpms.  That sound drove me nut untill I discovered its source.  It almosts sounded like valve clatter...I thought I had a mechanical problem.  It was amazing, I could fix the valve clatter by holding my mirror.     :thumb:

4000-6000 rpm is when the fuel tank vibrates?

Yes, as some people here have said, this is the tank vibrating range.
Yet I'm skeptic about this as regards my case, 'cause tank rubber (under C-shaped bracket) is in place, and the vibration pitch seems to me to be too high to be related to a large part like the fuel tank.
No big issue, though...It's something I can live with. :thumb:
