Does anyone know what the visual differences are between the '98-02 rear rims as opposed to the pre '98's, and post '02's?
I have a bead on getting a Katana rear wheel at the local scrapyard, but I want to make sure I am buying the correct one.

98-02 have a straight spoke
pre-98 has a curved sopke.
post 02 is a straight spoke also, but I'm pretty sure the bearings are a different size. Let me see what I can find.
They all have 17mm bearings.
Wheels have the width cast into them.
So there isn't any difference then?

So I need to ensure that the rim is a straight spoke, and I can get a guarantee that it is a '98-02 rim, because there are no visual differences?

Yes. All straight spoke 98+ Kat rear wheels are 4.5" The only differences in them are the color, which I have only seen black and silver.
If you can, get the caliper hanger bracket as well. It is a little shorter to match the smaller diameter rotor.

If I were to bring in my rear axle, would I be able to test it to see that way if it's the right rim in case they don't know?

A good idea to be sure, it cannot hurt to take it with you. When scavaging a boneyard, you never know what the previous owner had changed.

I wanted to add this for good measure.Pre 98 wheels or any swept spoke from a Katana are 3.5 the same as the GS.The Bandit 600 swept spoke is 4.5 but requires an inner spacer to be machined to match the smaller GS bearings.Other than that and a katana hanger it will work.
Im using my stock hanger. Absolutely no issues.

You have an issue you don't care about. A millimeter or two of the brake pad is not touching rotor. I have the same thing, and I don't care either, but if I could get the correct hanger, I'd probably switch it just so that it's "right"

Guys..a mm...really? Chuck, I didnt mean to sound harsh but it just doesn't bother me. I feel the same braking power I had with the stock wheel with the 2mm loss.
