I've already introduced myself in another thread, but anyway, I'm a student at the moment (masters), own a 1990 gs500 and I'm from Portugal (you know, the beach and sun place, ideal for vacations and stuff).
I any case, I've lurked around the forum for quite some time (and you all helped me solve some problems, thanks!), but this time I must ask for a more direct help.
My CDI fried (compete with lots of smoke and burnt plastic smell) and I'm thinking of buying a new one (bike moving is a lot better that a stopped bike).
I any case, do you know if the cdi from any gs500 precious to the new models, as in, say, a 1998 model's CDi will fit my old 1990 gs500? Will there need to be some calibrations of sorts?

CDI?!?!?!?.......No. not on a GS. it's just a regular coil, rotor ignition. Ummmm, so either you're thinking the coils are fried or the voltage regulator. Either way, the appropriate parts can be used from any bike up to a 2000 model.

Anyway, whatever you call it, pulse generator or whatever, It0s the thingy that tells the spark plugs when to fire. Still, if anything up to the 2000 model works, I think my problems are (almost) solved. Thanks.

Here is a breakdown of what years are compatiable as I know them. Not sure about 03 since it was not made in the US.
89 (may have different connectors than 90-02)
90-02 (01-02 should be the same, I have not had one to confirm)
04+ (different electrical system)
Have a word with these people, they have a tech support dept who will tell you what parts are needed and what years/models are compatable if you quote engine/frame numbers..... and the prices for all their electrical components inc CDI modules and reg/rects are way below OEM. I have used the UK subsiduary many times over the years and I cant recommend them enough.
A replacement wont involve any calibration, they just plug in but be aware that the original CDI module may have failed due to an underlying problem in the electrical system like a direct short to ground.
