Post by: tripleb on September 02, 2007, 11:11:13 AM
Does anyone know if a '04 F gauge cluster will fit my '90 E with no mods?

the ebay listing is here - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250158966947&ssPageName=STRK:MEBI:IT&ih=015

could you explain why it wont ?  As mounting and elctrical/ speedo look the same. This would help alot as im also in the market for a new guage cluster

The 90 tach is a mechanical drive, and the 04 tach is electrically driven.  Aside from that it should work fine.  The tach shouldn't be to hard to figure out though, the only real problem I can foresee is the difference in ignition systems between the 90 and 04 models.

Eventhough it is not a direct plug & play, the wiring is not a big deal.....

Connect the tach signal wire to the black/yellow of the right coil. There may be some other power/ground wires that may need to be dealt with. I have 3 bikes wired this way.

Then there is the drive that is still in the head. You can: 1) leave it alone 2) remove it and replace it with a plug from an 04+ or 3) pull the drive, remove the gear and plug the hole (where the gear was) with silcone. I have done both 2 & 3.

Yeah, didn't figure it would be terribly hard to rig up.   I tried #1 when I put the GSXR front end on my GS without a problem :thumb:

so what wouldn't work if I tried to just hook it up and not rewire anything?

so if I connected the black/yellow wire and left everything else alone would all the lights work as well as both the speedo and tach?

Do not know if there is anything else that needs to be changed. You will have to compair the harness connections to make sure they are in the same positions.
