Title: kawi motor powers gs frame
Post by: elric8467 on September 11, 2007, 05:35:15 AM
I know that this may be somewhat controversial but I have installed a 05 ninja 500 motor in a 00 gs frame. I have previously tried an 02 gs motor but could not get it to fire. It took some fabrication but not as much as you might think. Some relocation of a few motormounts as well as some minor modification of the right side frame rail. It's not done yet and I will try to post pics soon. I only have to do the exhaust and connect some electricals and she should be done. What do you guys think? I know the ninja motor is much faster and the gs frame is lighter so I'm hoping she'll be relativley quick. Before I wrecked the ninja I had the carbs rejetted for an aftermarket exhaust and independent pod air filters. I do have to figure out the best sprocket combo, right now i have a -2 ninja front and stock suzuki rear. I even cleaned out the frame a bit, got rid of the passenger foot peg brackets, cleaned up some of suzuki's welds and what not. So let me know what you think. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

You've taken the best parts of each machine and combined them ,it will be interesting to see the outcome  :thumb:

Does anyone have pics of a gs-ex? I'm having trouble with radiator placement.

I have not seen any pics or even heard of anyone actually doing this swap before, others have talked about.

The only place to fit the rad is in front of the frame just below the steering stem. If the EX rad does not fit then you will need to source one that does.

No controversy from me.  No brand loyalty here, I think that's a sexy project.  (A GSEXy project?? )

I want pics like you won't believe.

Here's an abreviated write up. The motors are fairly similar and share the upper rear motormount location. Remove the gs motor and grind the lower rear motormount tabs off of the frame. Position the new EX motor within the frame and align with the gs' upper rear motor mount. Secure the motor with a motormount bolt through the upper rear mount.  Using a jack, level and align the front of the new motor within the frame, keeping in mind that the sprockets must line up. You'll notice that the front motor mount tabs are millimeters off. I cut the front motor mount tabs off and then ran a bolt through the front motor mount with the cut motormount tabs on the bolt. I then welded the tabs to their new postion using the motor's position as  a template. You will unfortunatley need to modify the right removable frame rail to clear the water pump on the ex motor. Using the gs' frame rail mounting tabs cut the ninjas frame rail mounting tabs off and replace with the gs'.  REMEMBER MESURE 5 TIMES CUT ONCE!!!!!!!!!!The lower mounting tab will have to be attached with a 1/5" drop at the frame rail. at this point the motor should be supported within the frame. You will also have to fabricate some shifter linckage as the ninjas shifter would sit inside the frame of the gs. I decided to transfer every electrical component and control from the ninja to the gs but I had an entire spare ninja laying around.I used thecrbs for the ninja as well since I used the ninja cables too. Your radiator will fit at the front of the frame with some modification. once you plumb and connect everything it should be ready to go. Once I am done I will post a more in depth write up with pictures.

Not to poop on an exciting idea... but if you had a complete Ninja, why not just ride that?

I made the mistake of allowing my best friend the ride and or lay it over. After an abortive attempt to create a bobber I thought I would just trash it but a friend of mine had a gs he didn't know how to fix. I tried to fix it but it would have been a money pit. We were joking around when I got the Idea to do the swap.

Yeah, really is best of both worlds. I mean, I'm not a huge fan of fairings, but the ex500's are just not doing it for me.
