Title: radar detector
Post by: bigdaub on August 08, 2003, 02:33:58 PM
playing poker the other night with my buddies and the topic of radar detector for bikes came up.  non of us has ever heard of one, and when i looked online, i only found accessories for auto-specific radar detectors to make it bike-compatible.  anyone ever heard of a motorcycle specific radar detector?  and if so, how they work.

When we had that in-depth discussion about earplugs, I noticed that it said in that law that it is legal for motorcycles to have radar detectors - isn't it illegal for cars to have them?  Or is that jammers/interference equipment?  I don't member - I've been baking in the sun too long.

North Carolina is the only state that i am aware of Radar detectors being illegal. Jammers are illegal in most, but not all yet. I will have to look into ohio's laws on motorcycle radar detectors, b/c if they are legal i will rig mine up on my bike :)

I know for a fact that detectors are illegal in VA and D.C.  There are about 5 states that they are illegal, but I can't think of them off hand.

Detectors for bother laser and radar are legal in Ohio. Radar jammers are illegal but laser jammers are legal. Not many cops use lasers here anyways so the best you can have is probably a detector...

Radar detectors are legal in Texas (Jammers aren't). I have heard that if you get stopped (for whatever offense) and have a radar detector, you can count on them giving you a ticket rather than a warning.

The motorcycle units I've seen are just smaller car units with mounts/accessories.

Here are a coupe links: http://www.motorcycleradar.com/ and http://www.radarbusters.com/ from the August Motorcyclist magazine.

detectors are legal in every state except dc and va. jammers are illegal in every state by federal fcc regulations. laser jammers are legal in every state. both bel and escort make cordless detectors, however, they are not as sensative as a corded detector. those so called  passive radar jammers you see advertised by rocky mountian, phantom, or phazer simply don't work, not even a little. laser jammers made by k40, blinder, bel, and lidatek do actually work.

That comment about getting a ticket if you have a radar detector on isn't correct. I smell  :bs:
I have been stopped..well more than my fair share, and have gotten about half of my total stops were warnings with detector obviously on when it is churping in the background...normally I will turn it off when he strolls back to the car to check out info...then it is a crap shoot on ticket or warning.

As far as jammers like phazer II I haven't tried...if anyone has share?

Damn Kansas must be nice. Here in Va detectors are a no no. I have never used one, but 100% tickets, and 0% warnings. This is for 8-15mph over on the interstate a couple times. No front liscense plate one time. And was followed by a trooper for 4 miles (he was sitting in the interstate median when I went by) than pulled for 1 month expired tags. How he saw a 1"x1" sticker 40' away at 65mph I don't know. I think he just didn't like the punk kid in the car.

i dont get this front tag thing, in fla were only required one, mounted on rear, unless vehicle has equipment obscuring it then its relocated, on some semi/box trucks its located on the front. Do other states require a front tag on motorcycles? this being the case i would have to be a smartass and incorperate it with forkbrace. or make a fender outa plates.

no state requires a front plate on motorcycles, but some still do on cars.
