Hi,
I have a 98 gs500e and have been trying to remove the 2 screws/bolts to get the tank off. It seems jammed and I have been unable to remove it. Is it supposed to be that tight? Any suggestions on how to get it loose..I have tried WD40 already.
I was just trying to clean the air filter as it's dirty.
Thanks
LL
righty tighty, lefty loosey..
They should be tight but not as tight as you are describing. One thing you could try (carefully) slide a piece of pipe over a ratchet to give you a little more leverage. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO ROUND THE HEAD OF THE BOLT. Stop immediately if the socket starts to slip. Sounds like someone loaded up the bolt with lock tight at some point.
Someone prolly did some loctite nonsense, yep.
Put some PB-BLaster on it over night. Make sure you get the threads, not just the head ;)
LEt the penetrant work. Don't let it melt your paint though ;)
The other option is two remove the two screws that attach the tank to the mounting bracket. IF you remove the side covers there is a hex bolt on either side that mounts the bracket to the frame, in turn the bracket is connected to the tank.
To disconnect the bracket to the tank you will need I believe a 10mm box wrench and there are 2 bolts with rubber grommet/washer things and and some metal washers. They will probably fall of into the air filter so be prepared to dig them out.
11mm socket apply pressure, don't "bounce or hit/yank" movement, constant pressure..
the bolts have white lock-tite or simply accumulated corrosion (depending on the year)
Other people suggest PB Blaster which is a great idea if your looking at a rusted bolt, but if lock-tite on bolt, its all about elbow grease my friend..
I just did mine a few days ago, mind you I have a 2005, and it did require a little bit of "hummpppfh" to get it undone.
Thanks a lot guys. I got a better set of tools that helped.
