hello to everyone! got a small problem. on my 98 gs500e, i removed the airbox and installed the k&n filter. now it seems like its cutting out at high speed and high rpms. i havent down anything to the carbs so they are still at factory specs even the air fuel mixture screws. i havent got the vance and hines exhaust or the rejet kit yet. will that make a differance. im doing this on a budget. do i need to tweek the carbs some? and if so how much? i cant say how much i love this bike and all the help ive gotton for you guys. thanks a lot

Sound like you installed the lunchbox filter. Am I right? I highly suggest rejetting.

by lunckbox filter i assume you mean the open element type and not the one that would fit in the stock airbox. if so then yes i did. do you recommend rejetting with what is posted in GStwin.com's mod section with the 125 main's and 40 piolets?
You have to rejet as soon as possible if you are not willing to do engine swap...
It seems that you installed K&N RU-2970 (lunchbox) filter with stock jetting = very unhealthy combination because it is running very lean(not enough fuel getting to engine) ant too much air which makes your engine overheating easily. The high speed problem is also caused by leaned carbs.
I have only one advice: either go back to stock filter and airbox, if you don't have money for rejetting at the moment, or rejet immediatelly!

i was afraid you would say that, but i will install the stock air box for now. but yes that is the filter i installed. from what i was reading noone specified what kind of k&n to get so i got that one. is that the one most people are useing. i hope so cause i love the way it sounds on there. i didnt think it would change the sound of it but it did. thanks guys for all your help. hope one day ill have a picture on here. may not be much to look at but i love my gs
lunchbox is very good air filter and YES many people use that. also is does sound great! I love it. Plus it gives you a lot of air coming into carbs and with proper jetting and pipe you will get much more power.

It's hard to get the jetting right with the K&N and stock cannister. Too much air in and not enough out. It can be done, but it's pretty tedious. Others on here may have had some luck with this.

if you want more power without changing the exhaust you could go with K&N Drop in filter and then rejet. But again you'll have to give up lunchbox and it's nice sound :(
what I did when I was broke I purchased used can from stock GSXR600. It has better flow than stock GS500. mounted the can, lunchbox and rejetted. It was fairly cheap solution.
My conclusion is: go back to stock air filter for now, collect some money (I know it's the hardest part) and then do everything in one shot. (filter, exhaust, and rejetting) You will be surprised how much more power this little bike can offer O0

how did you get the can to fit off of the gsxr-600? what year did you get it off of also. im looking on ebay now but not sure really what im looking for
I got it from 2005 GSXR 600, but it requires you to have acces to weld machine or mig or tig. I don't weld very well so my father did that for me. But it's a lil' bit of work... You know: cutting, measuring, making the flange, welding, painting.... if you don't have acces to the welder it's propably not worth the money. If you want things easy and simple go with JARDINE FULL SYSTEM - cost around $340 and sounds good and it is FREE FLOW exhaust so it will match your KN lunchbox perfectly.

what is the jardin compared to the vance and hines
jardine fits all years and V&H does not. in my opinion jardine sounds better but it's personal preference. if it's about performance I dunno - propably they are similar. the last thing - it's easier to find Jardine I think.
My local shop gave me mine for 280 plus tax for vance and hines with free shipping here. Got here in 2 days and piece of cake to install. Sound has yet to be heard. My bike is apart for paint.
ill just have to shop around and see what i like i guess. also ive been looking at the rejetting and i see it says i need a #4 washer for the needle. now what thickness do i need? once again thanks a lot to all who have replied to my post. you guys have been so much help to me. ive only had my bike for a month now so im still in the learning stage.

I don't know what washers you should use cause I have freakin insane DJ Kit with adjustable needles. Anyways I think just regular #4 washers from your local hardware store will do well, but you need to confirm that before you buy cause I'm not sure.

afaik, #4 is #4, no different thicknesses. i picked mine up at ace.
wel guys i did it :). i rejetted the carbs and my GS is running fine!!! no cutting out or anything. i cant begin to thank you guys enough for your help with a newbie. know its time to drink a few :cheers: but no more beers than i have wheels.
