Look familiar?

CLEAR ALTERNATIVES TAILIGHT FOR HONDA

http://www.shopserv3.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CA&Product_Code=CTL-0026&Category_Code=HONDA

On my ride today, at a stop, I came across a 98 HONDA cbr1100xx and noticed the taillight looks very similar to the gs500. Upon closer examination and measurement I can say with certainty that this will fit 2001+ GS500. It appears to be the exact same lens, same shape, same mounting locations, etc, only set into bodywork of cbr much more than on GS.

I'll buy one and post.

If it's even close.........

That would look sweet flanked by two LP carbon/clear turns.........

In person, with the two bikes side by side they look identical. I've got one ordered...worse case I return it for 10% restocking fee ($4). Worth a shot.

i wish i made that clearer.. i meant i wouldnt mind having more color show, the red cover actually reduces the brightness a tad bit.

Found a side view, same site but in fender elliminator section (thats why its red here).

Starting to look good! You can see the similarities better now from side?  I'm hoping to get it and install before This coming weekend's Ortega ride. Shipping was supposed to be 2-3 days but you know how that can go.

Oh yeah, and with the included red bulbs (unit sells as a whole, not just lens-$40) it DOT approved.

Then you should get a '93 red with pink decals, like mine :bs: . It sure doesn't go unnoticed!   :?

i wonder if the place takes paypal, i want that.. it loooks like it will fit from the side view.

oh well another expenditure.. but it will be worth it. If i get teh clear tail lights, I will have to get rid of the stock indicators for buell indicators.

UPDATE:
got taillight last night. Tried it on this morning and it is NOT a direct fit. They DO look identical though. Differences are 1)the cbr1100 lens is shorter front to back by about 3/8" and mounting holes are 1/16" wider than GS holes. The overall shape of the mating surface, where it mates to the brake housing looks to be identical as well.

Overall external appearance lLooks IDENTICAL to the naked eye though. With a bit of dremel work I could probably get it to work, just not sure if I want to try...I could be out $12 overall if I return it or I could try it and worse case I'm out $45 if I trash the lens...

Would require shaving off some of the rear portion of the lens and slotting slightly the mounting holes. I may have to try.

This is what they look like side by side with the front faces flush to each other:

Cutting off the mounting bosses on backside by 3/8" or so is necessary to make the leading edge of the taillight (facing front of bike) match up with the taillight lens:

I have to check to see if the bottom edge needs to be shaved back a bit to seat it properly. Right now its not 100% mated to housing. Not sure if it needs a little more shaved from mounting bosses or the bottom edge shaved a bit. NEITHER-I JUST DIDNT HAVE IT SEATED ALL THE WAY DOWN...IT FITS PERFECTLY ON THE HOUSING ONCE THE BOSSES ARE SHAVED.

JeffD's LED lights aren't made to be seen through a clear lens. I need to paint the circuit board and (blue) tape silver or white so it isnt seen.

I'm not sure if this will work with the stock bulbs though. Not sure how much clearance there is from the bulb to the lens but with these LED's they work perfectly.

You could also buy these LED bulb replacements:
http://www.customdynamics.com/motorcycle_led_bulbs.htm

I've seen these and they are BRIGHT! Much brighter than JeffD's but much more $$ ($100/pair). Worth it I think.

Hmm. The more I look at it the less I like the clear lens. Doesnt seem to go with the Buell signals IMO. And being so BRIGHT compared to the red one works against it here too, IMO.

Might look better on a silver bike, or with the Lockhart-Phillips clear turn signals...

I'm going back to red. Anyone want to buy it for $45?

You wish. You guys that have 89-00 bikes can simply order one from clear alternatives for your bike (but it'll look same as you r current one's shape). The one seen here is for the 01+ models...

but you knew that. You just want the better looking one. :nana:

its for sale...I prefer the dark lens look on the rear of my bike...esp with the buells it seems to call attention to itself more.

It would look sweet on your silver tail...interested?

It was purely by chance I happened across a 98 cbr1100xx on a ride and noticed the similarities-then parked mine against it and figured it was close enough to buy and see. Fits with minor tweaks. Got to compare if it will fit with regular bulbs though. I cant say since I've got JeffD's LED's.

Weren't you going to get the LED's anyway?

Not sure how bright the lights are since I didn't have my keys with me this morning when I was out there installing it but I'd imagine they'd have to be brighter and maybe a little less red looking...but I'm just guessing.

LED's are bright and look awesome through this lens.

Fit is perfect, simply cut off part of the mounting bosses located inside and it slips right on. Still need to check bulb fit. The lens came with 2 red bulbs too...

grr...left cell at home. This IS my last day at work after all...hehehe...I forgot you got the LED's too.  I already swapped the red back on.

JohnLA, yoru silver tail and clear LP turn signals would look even better with a clear lens...interested? Maybe not given your work situation. Good to see you back on the board though. Hope your search goes well.

Or bbanjo? INterested in the lens.

Pablo, I think it might look good but yea I am going to pass for financial reasons.
It's good to be back I spent last week camping up in Northen Cali.  :thumb: I finally know why all those Nothern Californians are allways bragging about how damn pretty it is. I was lazy and drove the truck. I just couldn't see strapping a tent and 2 sleeping bags and all the other crap to my bike. Still had a great time. Did miss 2 wheels on some of those curves.

Back From the dead. I installed my clear tail ordered off eBay. It is the Clear Alt tail, but apparently they have modded it themselves so it is a direct fit, but still comes in the CBR 1100xx box. I bought my own leds. You can see pics here...
