The guy I bought my 96 GS from said that the off the line hesitation is normal and to be expected from a carb'd bike but I'm just not sure. With the bike idling, I can twist the throttle hard and it hesitates before it revs. We're not talking a long amount of time, bit its sure not instant like most bikes I've heard rev. This alone isn't a big deal, but I also notice it in first when coming off the line, I'll twist the throttle to take off as I release the clutch and it hesitates to the point of wanting to stall then the revs shoot upwards without me turning the throttle anymore., I can't seem to get a smooth acceleration off the line. Idle is nice, the bike seems to pull great through the powerband in all the other gears, I don't notice any bogs or anything else under acceleration either at WOT or Half throttle, its just when the bike is coming off its idle.
Everything else about the fuel system seems to be fine so I'd hate to go poking around the carb and create a bigger mess. If this is just the way they are I'll ignore it, but if its not, what are some things to do/check?
I've been having this same problem to some degree. Check my Throttle Problems post for more infor. I took the bike out again today and it seemed fine in idle and I put it into gear and was about to take off when the rpms just started to shoot up and stayed at like 3500rpms. I adjusted my carbs from there and it seemed to run better after that. Are you making sure to let the bike warm up prior to riding?
My RPMs don't shoot up, its like they don't go up for a second then the bike starts to accellerate. The only way I can really think of to describe it is a stumble. This is both warm and cold. It seems to be revving better in N now, theres no delay in the RPMs like there was when I first got the bike. Maybe there was old fuel when I got it. It still stumbles for a second when leaving the line though.
It shouldn't hesitate in neutral when twisting the throttle. Not so much that it would be noticeable anyway. The stumble when you leave from a stop could just be you. I don't know how much riding experience you have so I could be way off, but when I take off I notice that it will seem to stumble if I don't give it enough throttle as I release the clutch (or if my timing is off a bit). I'm not trying to insult you or anything, I'm just saying that if you're not used to taking off on the GS, it can seem like a problem with the bike when it's actually just operator error. My old roommate tried to ride my bike once and he couldn't take off to save his life. He kept asking me, "Why's it doing that?" when he would kill it. I felt bad telling him that it wasn't the bike, it was him.
Youo may be rich. My bike does the dame thing and Im a bit rich, When im cruising off the line at like 10mph and I crack open the throttle my bike slowly accelerates putting a full exhaust system on my bike should fix that. my first question is what has been done to the bike example changed the intake, exhaust,jets..... stuff like that.
