Title: HELP! I don't know what to do about this tire. (Read: Am I going to die?)
Post by: Raydr on October 13, 2007, 10:17:53 AM
I ordered a pair of AV45/46 from Bike Bandit - I ordered AV45 110/80R17 and AV46 140/80R17.

I just took them to be put in the rims and it wasn't until they were already on that I noticed that the package had been mislabeled for the AV45. Instead of the AV45, I was shipped the AV59 110/70-17.

They seem to be about the same price - I'm just wondering if I'm going to have any problems with this mix - an AV59 and a AV46. My bike is my primary transportation and I really can't be without it for another week...

Thanks!

The AV59 is a sport radial and the AV45/46 are sport touring radials.  The AV59 will be stickier and more responsive but will have a shorter life than the AV45.  They should work well together, many run a sport front with a sport touring rear.

I put a 110/70 Bridgestone BT010 supersport on the front of the 97 GS with a Avon AV36 sport touring rear, I needed one right away and that's all they had locally in my size.  No problem with the mix, steering seemed a bit twitcher at slow speeds at first, didn't even notice it after a while.

I wouldn't hesitate to put your mix on and use them but expect shorter life from the AV59 front tire than you'd get from a AV45.

I'd be a bit more concerned about the non-stock sizing, but I'd defer to Jack on that one.

The front is going to be ~.85" taller, and the rear will be ~1.65" taller, compared to stock 110/70 and 130/70.

Those are the differences in diameters, half that would be how much taller it is.  The A59 front Raydr received was the 110/70 stock size.  The 140/80 rear is 3/4-7/8" taller than 130/70 stock size.

I've used both the 110/70 and 110/80 fronts with the 140/80 rears with no problems.  It was more noticeable when I ran a 130/90 rear with a 110/70 front.  Steering was noticeably quicker but not a problem.  The 130/90 is about 1" taller than the 130/70.  Our 3.5" wide rear wheels are the preferred size for a 140/80 tire as well as for a 130/70 tire.
